âLook,â she continued. âI figure you and I should team up. You guys got to this case ahead of me, but I probably know a lot more about Royal than you do. Iâve studied him. I know all his friends and acquaintances, all his usual haunts.â
âThen,â Frank said, trying to walk away from her, âyou should have no trouble finding him on your own.â
âHey,â she said, tagging along, âweâre all on the same side here.â
âIf weâre all on the same side,â Joe said, âletâs see your PIâs license.â
Samâs eyes narrowed. âLetâs see yours.â
Frank stopped walking and looked Sam straight in the eyes. She was wearing the same cheap thirties detective outfit sheâd worn the night before, he noticed. âPersonally,â he said, âIâd settle for seeing just your ID.â
âI left it at home,â Sam said. âI never carry ID when I work. It might compromise my employers.â
âA likely story,â Joe said.
Just then Chelsea Sirkin came out of the front door of the building. âFrank, Joe, youâll never guess what I found,â she said. Then, noticing the woman in the trench coat and fedora, she added, âOh. Iâm sorry. Whoâs your friend?â
Joe stepped aside so Chelsea could get a better look at Sam. âChelsea Sirkin, Iâd like you to meet the ubiquitous Samantha Rockford.â
Chelseaâs jaw dropped open. Looking straight at Sam, she gasped, âWhat are you doing here?â

âSheâs trying to tag along with us,â Joe said. âBut I donât think weâre buying.â
âB-but her nameâs not Rockford, and sheâs not a PI!â Chelsea stammered. âHer real name is Teri McLean, and sheâs a fan whoâs been stalking Royal for years.â
McLean turned to run, but Joe grabbed her by the wrist and held tight. âOh, no,â he said. âYouâre not going to pull that disappearing act again.â
âYouâve got nothing on me,â McLean said. âLet me go or Iâll scream for the cops.â
âSheâs wrong about that,â Chelsea said. âWeâve got enough for the cops to hold her. Royal took out a restraining order against Teri that preventsher from being this close to him, his house, or his place of work. Sheâs in violation of that order right now.â
âGuess you arenât as innocent as you pretend,â Joe said.
Teri didnât reply, only tried to slide out of Joeâs grip. Joe had to use some of his wrestling skills to keep hold of her, but he didnât let her get away. After a while, she gave up and stopped struggling.
Chelsea was angry now. âYou bet she isnât innocent. She used to follow Anne Sakai around, too. Royal says that this woman is the reason Sakai left the country before she died.â
âSo, youâre saying that if it wasnât for Ms. Sweetness-and-Light here, Sakai might not have died in that plane crash?â Frank asked.
âThatâs a lie!â Teri McLean screamed. âAnne and I were good friends. She invited me down to that island!â
âYou were on St. Cecile before Anne Sakai died?â Chelsea asked, wide-eyed.
A cold calm passed over McLean, and her whole attitude changed. âIâm not saying anything more,â she said.
âI wouldnât clam up now if I were you,â Frank said. âYouâre in enough trouble as it is. Youâd better come clean if you hope to get out of this.â
McLean didnât say anything, and Joe, who still had her by the wrist, began to pull her backtoward the Viking Software building. As they neared the door, McLean suddenly yanked free and dashed to the red VW. She started to tug the door open, but Frank stopped her. âGoing somewhere?â he asked.
