right away. Heck, Evan gave them autographs. They looked at each other while scratching their heads as I explained to them that I was his girlfriend, but once Evan agreed, they backed off.

Easy to say, we didn’t get too much sleep after that. We tried keeping what happened between us and the officers, but we knew that soon, this story would spread. A well-known preacher’s daughter attacks a known local football player over a nobody. It sounded like something straight out of a bad sitcom.

But as we returned to our dorms finally, I could not help but smile. I saved my boyfriend, and in a way, he saved me from my own misery. It was sunrise when I finally returned to my room, and as I closed my eyes, I knew that after what happened, our relationship was going to stay grounded for a long time, at the very least. After I saved Evan from his crazy ex, he wasn’t going to be playing any girl for a long time.
For the next few days, it was a bit of a blackout. We both holed ourselves in the dorms as the rumor mill began churning like a freight train. Julie herself avoided staying with me for too long, as she heard that I beat up a Christian girl for looking at my man funny. Even though I explained to her that wasn’t what happened.

But, the good thing about controversies in the 21st century is that while they do explode, they fizzle out quite quickly. In about a week, everyone had moved onto the next hot button issue, and Evan and I made plans to see each other again.

We met over lunch at the local burger joint. As Evan ate his triple-decker burger, he said, “Been one hell of a week. Sally’s probably going to be locked up in the loony bin, and I still can’t get over what happened.”

As he spoke, his voice went from masculine to soft. “Anyway, I must thank you. You saved me back there, and for that, I’ll never forget it. Alisha, I…”

He trailed off, and then he gulped. I could tell that this was his pride that he was swallowing, and I gave him a warm, motherly smiled.

    “I love you.”

My heart skipped a beat, and my eyes felt wet. Those were just the onions on the burger, I swear. However, with tears in my eyes, I held his hands and said, “I love you too.”

The two of us gave each other warm gazes, and then he said, “Anyway, I’m glad the controversy finally died down, because the final game is coming up soon. We’re facing off against the Mantises, which is one of the toughest teams in the nation. Will you be there for me?”

I nodded. I still didn’t care for sports, and I don’t think I ever would, but I would always be there for Evan, no matter where he goes in life.

In no time at all, it was time for the big game. I watched from the front row as the Bobcats faced off against the Mantises. I was in the edge of my seat as the Bobcats were trailing behind during the first half of the game. As the halftime break happened, I met up with Evan.

“You can do this!” I told him, giving him a kiss on the cheek.

Then, the second half of the game began. I watched as Evan, with some renewed energy, was able to get the Bobcats tied with the Mantises. In the last minute of the game, the Mantises were getting close to scoring a touchdown. But then, Evan tackled one of the players and grabbed the football before he could. Evan ran towards the goal just as the buzzer went off.

To say everyone cheered was an understatement. There were tears, streamers, airhorns, and above all, more team spirit than a single arena could contain. Everyone huddled together to celebrate while I stayed in my bench for a good while until the people began leaving.

As I walked towards the exit, I met Evan in the corner.

    “Seem familiar?” he said.

It did. This was the same place where I first met Evan. At the time, I thought he’d just blow me off and I’d never see him again, but now, here we are.

Both of us held hands as we looked outside the
