did.  She could not understand how He could allow this.  It seemed betrayal.  But was it?  She and Peter had survived.  And she knew it was an absolute miracle that they did.  No question.  Had to be.

“If I can just get him through another night.  Another night.  Shhh little one, God has this all taken care of.  It is His plan we live for.  Not to question, just to rise above it.  It’s not about us.  It’s about His plan.  Let’s see what He will do with our lives.  Let’s see.”  Sometimes she would put it to a sweet melody.  But Peter always heard the same.  “God’s plan.  It’s an amazing plan.  Let’s trust Him.  Let’s live lives that just trust Him.  No matter what.”

Peter could hear her now as he was packing the wagon.  He hated to leave this town.  Mabria’s home, his room, just next door to the home he had built for his new wife Naomi.  Naomi’s parents were on the other side of their home.  Naomi’s father had given them this home; the barn had been modernized and changed into a home for them both as a wedding gift. This wonderful town.  These wonderful people. They had helped him so much.  Helped him with a new life.  It was time though.  For the next page, if you will, the next chapter, a fresh start.  Peter believed it was all God ordained when he received that envelope at the post office.  He had gotten notice from the lawyer in Savannah.  It was the death of his great-grandfather.  No other heirs.  No other living relatives.  Claim his home, or it will be set for auction.  Papa had talked about Savannah.  He said his great-grandfather was horribly rich, but horribly mean.  None of the family thought it was worth staying in contact with him.  Papa’s father and mother had attempted to stay with him, but became embittered and moved north.  They had both died in a typhoid outbreak before the raid.  It was very sad.

Boaz ran up to the wagon as they prepared to leave.  “Peter,” he yelled and laughed out loud, “don’t leave without saying goodbye to me.”

“I wasn’t, I knew you’d come running little brother.  Take care of your folks for me.  I’ll write as soon as we get there.  I’m hoping in a few years you can come help me.”

“Ahh Peter, you know I can’t.  Too much to do here.  I really want to run this store.  And then of course, there is Lucy.  She loves me Peter.  She loves me!”

Peter winced at the sound of Lucy’s name.  Don and Mabria couldn’t stand the girl.  What a mean little spoiled child she had been.  And she would surely remain to be as she was entering her teen years.  “I don’t know about that Boaz.  Stay clear of those girls until you get your head on straight.  Your folks got more wisdom than you think.  Come down to Savannah with me, I’ll fix you up with a sensible girl.  One that can tear herself away from all the finer things in life once in a while.”

“Ah go on, she’s a good girl.  Write me soon,” he hollered as Peter tipped his hat and drove out.

Mabria walked up behind Boaz, “I hate to see them leave.  So far away.  I never did have a conversation with him that I wanted to.”

“What was that ma?” Boaz asked.

“Ah, just wanted to tell him about some things that happened the night his folks died.  I suppose nothing important.  Just never could bring myself to speak of it, unless I was singing about trusting God.”

“You’re good at that mama,” he laughed.  “Singing I mean, and trusting God as well.  Speaking of which, I’m going to see if I can find Lucy.  You need to trust me and God on this one,” he laughed.

“Boy if I had a switch and you were just a bit younger..hm hm hm..you are too young to be chasing girls.  Get on over that store and help your pa, with Naomi married and now Boaz gone, the work load is overwhelming!”

“I’ll miss her ma.  If I was just 10 years older, I would
