laughing again. I couldnât help but laugh, too. âYou guys are so stupid.â
We laughed for a minute as we made our way down the hall to our classes. Ava and Chastity went on their way. Sheridan stopped me just as I was about to go into my class.
âSeriously, Maya. Iâm not feeling Jayla. You donât think itâs weird that she just so happened to be transferring to your school?â
âSheâs harmless.â As soon as I said it, I realized I had said that exact same thing about Valerie, and look at how that ended, with her trying to kill me at my fatherâs cabin. âNah,â I said, âJayla is harmless. A little freaky, but harmless, nonetheless.â
Chapter 13
I made my way into my office and had just taken the top off my Fiji water when I looked up to see Ariel standing in my doorway. She didnât have her usual smile on and was instead staring at me like she wanted to wring my neck or something.
âMay I help you?â I asked.
She still didnât say anything and just kept glaring.
âWhat in the world is your problem?â I said.
She walked into my office like sheâd received a personal Evite. âPeople like you,â she snarled.
My mouth fell open. âExcuse me?â
âYou know, itâs so unfair how people like you come up. Everything is just laid out for you on a silver platter, so you donât know what itâs like to work hard.â
This trick had lost her mind. As hard as I worked trying to balance school and stay on top of my job here at Rumor Central , she had me messed up.
She continued. âYou were lucky enough to be born into money, so you think youâre better than everyone else.â
âAriel, what in the world are you talking about? Have you completely lost your mind? Did you forget who you work for?â
She folded her arms defiantly. I swear, if I didnât know better, Iâd think she had a split personality and this was the crazy one. Iâd never seen her act like this. âOh, trust. I didnât forget who I work for. You wonât let me forget that I work for you.â
âIt is what it is. Thatâs the whole reason youâre hereâto be my assistant. If you have a problem with that, thereâs the door.â I pointed to the door sheâd just walked through.
She just glared at me. âYou know, if you didnât want to help me, all you had to do was say you didnât.â
âYou know what, get out of my office,â I said, turning around in my seat and dismissing her. âIâm tired. I donât have time for your drama.â
She walked over and had the nerve to slam her demo tape down on my desk. âJuan from maintenance gave me my tape. He found it in the trash.â
Oops. I almost said, âAnd?â But I just shrugged and said, âI was looking for it. I didnât know what had happened to it. It mustâve fallen off my desk and into the trash can.â
âYou are such a liar.â
âAnd you are so out of line,â I said slowly. âI know youâre older than me, but remember whoâs still the boss.â
âAll I wanted was your help.â
âWhy donât you do the job that we pay you to do,â I said. âThen we can worry about all that other stuff later. Besides, you really should be somewhere at least a month before you start trying to take someone elseâs job.â
âSo, is that what youâre worried about, my taking your job?â
I had to laugh at that. âHoney Boo Boo, please. In your wildest fantasy, you couldnât take anything from me. In fact the only thing you need to be taking is notes.â
âIâm majoring in radio, TV, film,â she said, like that was supposed to mean something.
âAnd while theyâre teaching you in the classroom, Iâm working it in the studio as one of the hottest hosts in the country. So if
