    smile on his face.
“Hey, baby, you okay?” Ben murmured. “I didn’t hurt you?”
“I’m great,” Stefan whispered back. “How are you?”
“A little weak in the knees.” Ben chuckled. Ben leaned into the
hand that Stefan stroked over his cheek.
    “I like that.”
    “Like what?” Ben asked, confused.
Stefan grinned. “Knowing I can bring you to your knees.”
“I suspect that there are a lot of things you’re going to like over
the years,” Ben said as he stood to his feet. His legs wobbled a bit, but
he had enough strength to lower Stefan carefully to the floor. “I don’t
seem to have any resistance to you.”
“Are you saying that’s a bad thing?” Stefan asked as he fixed his
    clothes.
“No, but I suspect our lunches need to be few and far between, or
I won’t get any work done.” Ben pulled his pants up and buttoned
them. He grinned over at Stefan. “How am I supposed to concentrate
on work with your sexy ass hanging around?”
“You could always come home early.”
Ben snorted. He could just picture himself running out of the
sheriff’s office the way Joe did when Nate called. Somehow, the idea
didn’t seem so bad to him. He could see himself doing exactly that.

Ben opened the door and smacked Stefan on the ass as he walked
by. “Lunch is at one o’clock tomorrow. I expect to see you then.”

    Chapter 4
Stefan bounced from foot to foot as he watched out the window,
waiting for Ben to get home from work. Over the last few weeks,
Stefan had grown to love the time when Ben came home from work.
It usually led to some more interesting, and slightly sweaty, activities.
This time, though, worry filled Stefan as he waited.
He’d talked to Devlin on the phone, just wanting to check in with
his old coven, and heard the news from the Prince’s consort that
Oliver was preparing to claim Audley in a commitment ceremony.
They needed to do something before that happened.
Audley and Stefan had been friends for years. Besides Ben and
Devlin, Stefan couldn’t think of anyone he felt closer to in the world.
He couldn’t leave Audley to face Dane and Oliver alone, not when he
might be able to do something about the situation.
Stefan’s heart thudded when Ben’s truck pulled up in front of the
house. He twisted his hands together nervously in front of him as he
waited for the man to reach the front door. His mind congested with
    doubts and fears.
What if Ben said no? What if he got mad? What if Ben didn’t
want to go after Audley? All of the scenarios running through
Stefan’s head were a very real possibility. The longer it took for Ben
to reach the house, the more scared Stefan became.
Finally, the front door opened and Ben walked in, a large smile on
his face. Stefan couldn’t help but smile back. The more time they
spent together, the more Ben seemed to smile. Stefan hoped it was
    due to him.
“Hey, baby,” Ben said. “How was your day?”

“Better now that you’re home.” Stefan’s nervousness of a few
minutes ago disappeared in the face of the man who stood before him.
Stefan launched himself across the room and threw himself into Ben’s
arms, his lips searching desperately for his mate’s.
“I think someone missed me,” Ben said against Stefan’s lips.
“I did miss you,” Stefan assured his mate. “If I could figure out
how you could work from home, I would.” If Stefan had his way, Ben
would never leave, not only because Stefan hated his mate being gone
all day long, but because he worried about him.
“It’s only been a couple of weeks since I claimed you, Stefan,”
Ben replied. “Haven’t you gotten used to me being gone to work by
    now?”
Stefan rubbed Ben’s chest. “I hope I never get used to it.”
“You know what I do is dangerous, but I take every precaution, I
    promise,” Ben said. “I would
