with two girls who leaned against the wall. âNow,
watch. Robin is going to come from this direction.â
A group of five or six students walked up the hallway toward Ashley, Robin among
them. As Robin passed Ashley, she rubbed her hand across Ashleyâs back. Ashley jumped
and turned around, but by then, Robin had slipped ahead in the group.
âYou saw that, right?â Denise asked me.
âYeah. She touched her.â
âRight. Now, Iâm going to fast-forward to later that afternoon.â
Denise fast-forwarded the video. Ashley was walking up some steps with more students.
She stopped suddenly and looked down the hallway, as if sheâd seen something.
Ashley slowly walked away, still looking back. Then she started to run. Suddenly,
Ashley was out of sight on the video.
âHereâs what happened from another camera,â Denise said. She opened the other file.
From a different angle, Ashley was running down the hallway, then she tripped and
fell. She looked back. She had a terrified look on her face. The video stopped.
âYou saw that?â Denise asked. âItâs like she saw something!â
âI guess,â I said, unconvinced. âI mean, I saw her running. I couldnât really tell.â
âAdrian, this was the exact day Raven told me that she could ignore the taunts, but
her sister couldnât ignore them anymore,â Denise explained. âAshley saw something,
Adrian!â
I knew I had a blank look on my face. I still wasnât convinced.
âShe just ran down the hallway,â I said. âThat doesnât mean she saw a ghost.â
âOkay. Watch this,â Denise said. She pulled out another DVD labeled Jason March 5 and played a video file on it. âLook at the boy with the basketball jersey on. Thatâs
Jason. This was right before his basketball practice.â
Jason was talking to a group of guys. Once again, Robin walked right behind him and
slightly touched the back of his shoulder. It didnât look as if Jason felt anything;
he just kept laughing with his friends.
Denise fast-forwarded a bit more, then pressed Play. Jason was walking down the hallway
by himself, dribbling a basketball. He suddenly stopped as if he had just walked
into a glass wall. His head slowly tilted back as if someone had him by the neck.
He dropped the basketball, and slowly elevated from the floor. He was hovering above
the floor. Oh, my God ! What was going on? How was this possible?
Denise pressed Pause, and looked at me. Was this some type of joke Denise was playing
on me? But she wasnât laughing; she looked distressed and unhappy. After a moment,
she turned back to the computer and pressed Play again.
Jason dropped to the ground holding his neck, gasping for air. He got up and took
off running. The video ended. We both sat there in silence.
âWhat was that?â I asked, breaking the silence.
âDo you believe me now?â Denise asked.
âI donât know,â I said, baffled. âI donât know what to believe. I mean, there has
to be some type of explanation, right?â
âThere isnât one.â Denise shook her head. âAfter this happened to Jason and Ashley,
they werenât the same. Their parents took them out of the school and we never heard
back from them.â
âHas anyone else seen this?â I asked.
âNo. I wanted to show someone, but I didnât. I knew there was something going on
here, so I sneaked in here last year and looked through the footage. I took a few
video editing classes in college, so I converted the footage with some editing software
and saved it on DVDs. I knew it shouldnât be deleted. This is all new to me, like
it is to you. This is only my second year here, Adrian,â Denise explained. âAnd since
Raven felt comfortable enough to talk to me, I didnât want to betray her trust. These
videos arenât enough evidence to accuse
