softly. Looking in her eyes I could see
her concern and sincerity.
    “Thank you. I appreciate
that.” I mumbled, as my head sparked more pain. Another reminder of my binge
drinking from the night before.
We lay there for hours as
I tried to recover some composure. It was late in the day before I finally got
out of bed, but only to satisfy my extremely noisy stomach, which would not
stop complaining. Haley and I went to the kitchen, where we made macaroni and
cheese. We spent the remainder of the evening on the couch and watched TV. I
didn’t say anything to her, but I was extremely grateful for her staying with
me, as she was a welcome distraction from my thoughts.
    “Feeling better?” Haley
asked from the other side of the couch.
    “Much better thanks, I
almost feel like myself again.” I replied.
    “That’s great.” She spoke
with a smile, “I have to get going. I have work tomorrow.” She added. After a
moment of thinking I sat up.
    “Thanks for being here
with me. It means a lot to me. I needed the company.” I said, smiling at her
gratefully.
“I know. You don't have to
tell me what’s going on, but I could tell you needed a friend.” She replied,
standing up.
“Thank you.” I said with a
soft smile.
She walked to my room and
gathered her belongings. Once she was ready, she returned and looked at me
through narrowed eyes, “You sure you’re alright? Not going to get drunk and
fight people again are you?” She asked.
    “I’m okay. For some reason,
I just lost it last night.” I replied seriously.
    “Okay then. Take care of
yourself James.” Haley said. Walking to the door, she threw me a quick wave and
walked out.
    The remainder of the night
I spent watching movies and trying not to think at all. Sleep found me fairly
easily when I got into bed and I was met with a dreamless night.
    Easing myself from my bed,
my aches and pains were noticeable but overall I was much better. Breathing out
slowly, I composed myself as I heard my phone beep. I hadn’t checked it in over
a day.
    Looking down at my phone,
I cursed as I had 15 missed calls and as many messages. Most from Chris and
Brad, but a few of them were from Amanda. The majority of them were checking
where I was and saying they were going out with the girls, and I should be
coming with them.
    The later messages took a
turn for the worse. It appeared they had seen me in the club the other night
leaving with Haley. The final message I got was from Chris saying Amanda didn’t
take seeing me leave with Haley very well, and she and the girls had left
shortly after.
    Amanda’s messages were the
same. Looking to see if I wanted to come out to the clubs. Where was I? But her
last was from the following day saying she hoped I had a great night and she
only had two more days until she went home. She left it at that, and I just
stared at her message not knowing what else to do.
    Finally I picked up the
phone and dialed Chris. “Where the hell have you been? What happened to you the
other night? Are you alright?” He asked angrily as he answered the phone.
    “Honestly man it’s hard to
explain.” I started. Sighing, I resigned myself to tell him the truth, “Chris.
My sister got into a car accident back home. She’s in a coma. I was going to go
home, but my family wants me to stay out here. I felt helpless, and got pissed
off and got into a fight. I also nearly had sex with Haley again.” I said,
letting it all spill out. ”I didn’t know what to do man, so I did something
stupid.” I added. There was silence for a moment as Chris took it all in.
    “Why didn't you tell me
mate?” He said softly. He seemed surprised I had kept it to myself.
“I didn’t know what to say
and to be honest, it took me until now to even process it. She’s my sister man.
What am I meant to do?” I replied just as softly.
“I can’t even begin to say
how I would feel if something like that happened to one of my family members James,
but it’s not
