to the giant. âWhy is the Inspector taking apples?â Ulf asked.
âApples are tasty,â Orson said.
They loaded everything into the back of the truck.
âIn you go, too, Mr. Orson,â the Inspector said.
âIn the truck? But I usually walk,â Orson told him.
âThereâs no time for that. In you get.â
Awkwardly, Orson stepped up and squeezed himself into the back of the truck. He had to bend over with his knees tucked against his chest.
Ulf looked at him hunched up inside. âDo you want me to come too?â he asked.
âYou must stay here, werewolf,â the Inspector said.
Orson winked. âThanks, Ulf, but Iâll be fine. Keep an eye on things here for me.â
âWe will,â Tiana replied, hovering by Ulfâs side.
âThereâs no time to chat,â Inspector Black said, shooing the fairy out of the way with his gloved hand. âWeâre in a hurry.â He pushed past Ulf and slammed the back doors of the truck.
The Inspector climbed up into the front seat as Dr. Fielding opened the entrance gates. He revved the engine, and the truckâs wheels scrunched on the gravel.
Ulf saw Tiana lying on the ground. âAre you okay?â he asked, picking her up.
Sparkles fizzed weakly from her wings. She lay crumpled on Ulfâs hand as the truck drove off up the driveway.
âHe hit me,â Tiana said. âInspector Black hit me.â
Chapter 16
DR. FIELDING CLOSED THE ENTRANCE GATES . âCome on, Ulf, itâs time for your checkup,â she told him.
âThereâs something wrong with Tiana,â Ulf said. He held out his hand to show Dr. Fielding. The little fairy was gripping on to the hairs on Ulfâs palm, trying not to topple. She looked pale.
Dr. Fielding knelt down. âWhat happened to you, Tiana?â she asked.
âI got bashed,â Tiana said.
âInspector Black hit her,â Ulf explained.
âIâm sure he didnât mean to,â Dr. Fielding said. She checked the fairyâs wing. It was bent and crumpled like tissue paper. âItâs not broken but youâve lost your sparkle, Tiana. No flying for a while. Come on, Ulf. Weâll get her comfortable.â
Ulf carried Tiana inside. He followed Dr. Fielding into her surgery, the room where she performed health checks and smaller operations.
Dr. Fielding placed Tiana on a ball of cotton wool. âYouâll be okay there, Tiana,â she said. âYou need to rest.â
Tiana lay down and closed her eyes.
âRight, now letâs have a look at you, Ulf,â Dr. Fielding said.
Every month, on the day of his transformation, Dr. Fielding gave Ulf a full physical examination to monitor his development. The RSPCB kept records of all of their beasts, gathering as much scientific information as they could before the beasts were released back into the wild. Werewolves were no exception.
Ulf sat on the edge of the examination table.
âDid you get any sleep last night?â Dr. Fielding asked him, flicking through his medical records.
âNot much,â Ulf replied.
âYouâre turning nocturnal,â Dr. Fielding told him. âHow are you feeling?â
âI feel strong. I could have gone with Orson.â
âIt isnât safe for you, Iâm afraid,â Dr. Fielding said.
âBut Iâm a werewolf. Iâm not scared.â
âI need you here, Ulf, to help me guard the beasts.â
Dr. Fielding held his hand and pressed her fingers on his wrist, checking his pulse. She looked at her watch and counted.
âItâs racing,â she said. âTwo hundred and twenty beats per minute.â
âIs that good?â Ulf asked.
âFor a werewolf it is.â
Ulf opened his mouth, and Dr. Fielding looked inside.
âThe tips of your fangs are coming through your gums,â she said.
Ulfâs jaw and tongue were getting longer. Dr. Fielding took a
