anything seriously?â
âOnly when forced. But for you, dear Charlotte, Iâll attempt to restrain my levity.â He leaned forward. âIfâ¦â
She arched one brow. âIf?â
âYou agree to spend the day with me. Alone.â
Her fetching blush made his blood roar through his veins. âI donât think thatâs wise,â she said.
âWhy not?â He fought for control over his wayward arousal. âWe have much to discuss if youâre to be my valet. Thereâs the matter of your salary and my clothing budget, which will be much strained with all the new dressing gowns you mean for me to buy, not to mentionââ
âDo be serious.â
He leveled her with an intent gaze. âI am. Spend the day with me, Charlotte. Weâll go for a long ride, have a picnic lunchâ¦â
âSuch a tête-à -tête would only give our fathers an excuse for forcing the marriage.â
Bloody hell, she was as skittish as a yearling with its first halter. âThen weâll take a groom. Of course, if youâre too much a coward to spend time with me aloneâ¦â
She bristled, as heâd known she would. âIt has more to do with good sense than cowardice.â
A new voice came from the doorway. âWhat does?â
David bit back a curse. If his little brother didnât watch it, he was going to find himself on the wrong side of a beating. âNothing that concerns you, Giles.â
Before Giles could answer, the maid entered with a pot of tea for Charlotte. Then she started. âBegging your pardon, sirs, I didnât realize the lady had company, or I would have brought more.â
âItâs fine, Molly,â David bit out as the maid came round the table to him. Flashing him a coy smile, she bent close enough that her bosom brushed his shoulder as she poured him a cup. When Charlotte scowled at her, David ground his teeth in irritation. Molly had become quite the little flirt lately. He would have to have a talk with the housekeeper.
âCan I get you anything else, sir?â Molly said in avoice that left no question as to what she really wanted to offer him.
âNo thank you,â he said. âThat will be all.â
â Iâd like some tea,â Charlotte said tersely.
âOf course, miss,â Molly said as she walked behind David to pass in front of Giles.
When David saw Giles brush his hand over Mollyâs ass, he tensed. Thank God Charlotte couldnât see it from where she sat, or it would only reinforce her opinion of them as a family of profligates.
After Molly left, Charlotte flashed Giles a friendly smile that rubbed David raw. âYour brother has asked me to go out riding for a picnic,â Charlotte said blithely. âWhy donât you join us?â
âCertainly,â said his imp of a brother.
âThe bloody hell you will,â David ground out.
âTsk, tsk,â Giles retorted. âSuch language in front of a lady.â
David shot to his feet. âI have to go put on my riding coat.â He caught his brother by the arm as Giles attempted to pass. âAnd youâre going with me. Now.â
âBut I havenât eaten,â Giles protested as David dragged him toward the door.
âIf you donât come with me,â David growled in his brotherâs ear, âyouâll be eating my fist.â
Giles grimaced, then glanced at Charlotte. âExcuse me, Miss Page. It seems my brother needs help putting on his riding coat.â
David ignored Gilesâs snide remark, but couldnât help noting the unease on Charlotteâs face. He halted near the door to pin her with a dark glance. âStay here. Donât you dare leave.â
She shot to her feet, eyes flashing. âOr what?â
âOr Iâll tell our fathers what we discussed in the garden shed.â
He regretted the threat when the blood drained from her
