Coltrane and let Kelvin Michael Payne keep his life and his money to himself.
Determined to do just that, she moved on to the next names on her list, a pair of talented women who did the handwork on her designs. The call to the Winston sisters, Amaya and Gaia, turned out better than sheâd hoped when they agreed to deliver the blouses they were working on without immediate payment.
âYouâve been fair with us, Miss Bianca,â Gaia, the younger one, told her. âItâs only right that we return the favor.â
Grateful for the sisterâs willingness to bill her, Bianca disconnected the call and had a single regret as she stood to stretch. Why did Gaia feel the need to constantly call her âMiss Bianca,â like she was a sixty-year-old dowager?
âIâm barely mid-thirties and she addresses me like Iâm ready for a rocking chair.â Moving close to the wall mirror, she twisted to see herself. The view wasnât bad, but how long did âmid-thirtiesâ last, anyway? And with no man, no children, no prospectsâ¦
The cellphone rang in her hand. âHello?â
âB? Claire here, hon.â
The Neimanâs buyerâs sunny drawl was a bit of bright sweetness in her ear. Bianca hoped that it didnât presage disappointment. She pressed her back against the wall, took a deep breath, and crossed her fingers.
âHey, Claire. Please tell me you have good news.â Please.
âI heard about the robbery on the news.â Claireâs tongue clicked softly. âWhen they mentioned the address, I thought, âI know that address.â I didnât put it with you until the next day. So sad,â she sighed. âWhat can I do to help?â
âYou can tell me that youâve gotten approval for the blouses I showed youâ¦and how many you want to order.â Bianca didnât care that her voice was ribboned with prayer. A big enough order from this woman meant light would return to her little corner of the world. âThat is why you called, isnât it?â
âIt is.â
Bianca wasnât sure, but she thought Claireâs voice amped up a notch. Andâ¦
âAnd, hon, weâre going to do a trial order.â
And that means⦠Bianca was half an inch from outright begging.
âThat means weâll take six dozen.â
Only six dozen? Thatâs all? Seventy-two lousy shirts? Bianca flopped back against the wall and slid down to the floor.
âYouâre so quiet,â Claire said stiffly. âI thought youâd be pleased.â
Pennies add up⦠Seventy-two shirts would generate some money, and beggars couldnât be choosers. And Iâm pretty much a beggar right now. âIâm sorry, Claire. Six dozen is great. And in the Neiman market, wellâ¦thank you, is all I can say.â
âSix dozen garments going into twenty key stores may not sound like a lot, initially, butâ¦â
Twenty stores? Bianca sat up straight. âSix dozen shirts per store?â
âIs that going to be a problem, hon?â Claireâs voice went stiff again.
âNo problem at all.â Struggling to keep from dancing, Bianca gripped the phone in both hands.
âYou can look for the contract within the week. Review it yourself, have it looked at by somebody you trust, get it back to me, and weâll be in business.â
âYou can count on it,â Bianca promised.
âBianca?â Claire let her voice cool. âI am sorry about your shop, but once you sign the contract, Neimanâs is going to hold you to it, and so am I.â The deliberate words hung between the two women.
âOf course,â Bianca finally said.
âHave a good day, hon.â
Dread whispered across Biancaâs skin, leaving goose bumps in its wake. What if I sign the contract and canât deliver?
Not gonna happen. Clutching the thought, she pushed away from the wall and walked over
