such little pests. And itâs always worse when youâre around.â
âYouâre blaming me?â
âNot you, but Midori. It wouldnât be so bad if she hadnât taken such a shine to you.â
âA shine!â
âYeah, she thinks youâre real dreamy. Canât you tell how sheâs always giving you cow eyes and laughing at your jokes?â
âEverybody laughs at my jokes. Iâm a funny guy.â
âNot that funny, and not everybody,â Tadashi reâsponded.
âWell, everybody except Toshio.â Toshio and anâother kid from Sikima were walking up ahead of us. Like always he was talking too loud. Iâd rather walk with Tadashiâs sisters then be around him. He and his family had only just moved to the village this past summer and heâd taken an instant dislike to me. His English was getting better, but even in the beginning, when he couldnât do much more than grunt, he made it pretty clear he wanted to fight me. He was two years older than me, but I was a full head taller and outâweighed him.
âToshio might think youâre funny too, but heâs too busy being jealous of all the attention Midori shows you.â
âJealous? Of me and Midori? Sheâs just a kid. What is she, eleven years old?â
âSheâll soon be twelve,â Tadashi replied as he picked up a stick from the ground.
âEleven, twelve, big difference.â
âIt is to Toshio. I think heâd like to make Midori his bride some day.â
I could see what old Toshio might be thinking. I wouldnât admit it to anybody, heck.
I hardly admitted it to myself, but I could see where he could take a shine to Midori. She had big brown eyes, soft round features and was really pretty. She also had a sense of humor. But, she was years younger. I had my eye on a couple of girls at school. Girls my age. At least now it all made sense why this guy didnât like me.
âCome on, letâs speed up and Iâll give Toshio my blessing. Heck, Iâll even get them a wedding present.
Maybe then heâll go easy on me.â
âItâs my fatherâs blessing heâll be asking. But he probably still wonât feel any different towards you,â
Tadashi said.
âWhat else? Is he jealous of our friendship? Tell him he can marry you too,â I joked.
âOther reasons,â he replied quietly and I knew there was more beneath his somber expression.
âWhat other reasons?â
âYou gotta understand, Jed, these Japanese can be a little strange.â
âThese Japanese? What do you mean âthese Japaânese?â What do you think you are, an Eskimo?â
âYou know what I mean. The Issei .â
Issei are the people who were born in Japan. Mostly those were just the older people, like parents and grandparents. Almost all of them were now naturalized Canadian citizens. Those born in Canada, like Tadi and most of the other kids, are the Nisei .
âWhat sort of strange ideas?â I asked.
âI donât really want to talk about it.â
âThen you shouldnât have started what you donât want to finish. Explain it to me.â
âThey just donât think a Japanese should marry somebody other than another Japanese.â
âYeah, well I think we both have it figured out Iâm not planning on marrying your little sister.â
âBut itâs more than that. They donât think that anyâbody should ever ⦠look I told you I donât want to talk about this any more.â
âSounds like you donât know what youâre talking about.â
âYeah, I know what Iâm talking about. You canât get me to tell you by giving me a hard time. Iâm not stupid you know. Iâm no Toshio.â
âOkay, okay,â I admitted. âAlthough someday you may have a bunch of half-Toshio little nieces and nephâews
