Montana.â
âI imagine not. We found a lot of guns stashed up at Carla and Lloydâs house. I take it Sean learned to shoot.â
âWe all learn to shoot around here. It doesnât make us criminals.â Kyle picked up his cell phone and stared at his screen. âSean is a good kid. He would have never gotten involved in something like this.â
âDo you know anything about Carla and Lloydâs militia group?â
Kyle smirked. âI donât like to speak ill of the dead, but youâre not giving me much choice here. My aunt and uncle werenât the brightest of souls. Sean told me about the meetings they were having up at the house so I made sure I was around for one. It was just a bunch of drug addicts who seemed more intent on getting another fix than organizing an insurgency.â
âWas Sean involved in the group?â
âHe was drawn to it when he was younger, but he soon saw it for what it was. Not that his opinion mattered. Lloyd insisted that he go to the meetings.â
âKyle, itâs important that you let me know the minute Sean contacts you. We have reason to believe that Carla and Lloyd Spencer had an accomplice. Weâd like nothing more than to rule Sean out.â
Kyle ran his fingers along the edge of the table. âWhat makes you think there was someone else?â
âIâm not at liberty to say. Do you know if Carla was any good on a dirt bike?â
He rubbed his right shoulder with his left hand. âHow do you mean?â
âI understand she used to have one, but sheâs not ridden recently. Do you know anything about that?â
âI saw her on a dirt bike a few weeks back. She seemed pretty competent to me.â
âWhere was this?â
âOut on the trails near the footbridge, north of town.â
âThatâs a pretty isolated area.â
âThereâs a lot of homeless camping out that way. My church group goes out every week to distribute food and clothing. I focus on getting counseling for anyone who has addiction issues.â
âWas Carla competent on the bike?â
âItâs pretty rugged down that way. Iâd say she had to be.â
âWho was she with?â
He hesitated. âIâm not sure. The guy was wearing a helmet. I wasnât introduced.â
Macy pulled an image of the Alliance logo out of her file.
âDoes this logo look familiar to you? Could either Carla or the man she was with have been wearing gear with this logo on it?â
âMaybe,â said Kyle. âHard to say. It all looks the same to me.â
âDo you ride a motorbike, Kyle?â
âNot for a long time. Wiping out on one is what messed up my shoulder in the first place.â
âI understand youâve spent the past week in Bozeman.â
âActually, it was Missoula. I was visiting friends.â He picked up his cell phone again. âIâm guessing you need proof.â
âIâm afraid so.â
Kyle wrote down a few names and numbers on a napkin and handed it to Macy.
âThank you, Kyle. I appreciate your cooperation.â
âYouâre just doing your job.â
âDo you know if Sean has had any contact with his real father recently?â
âScott showed up in Seanâs life just long enough to give Sean an idea of what heâd been missing when he got stuck with Lloyd as a stepfather,â said Kyle. âAs far as I know, Sean hasnât seen him since he was ten.â
âDo you know Scottâs last name? Sean may have tried to get in touch with him.â
âI really donât think Sean had anything to do with this.â
âWe just want to speak to Sean,â said Macy. âAt this point heâs not a suspect.â
âHis fatherâs name is Scott Walker.â
âIs that all you have?â
âThat might be all there is. Heâs a survivalist who lives off the
