Anchorage on our territory. Why have you decided to work and now live in a city run by vampires?â He ran one hand over his cropped blond hair and let out a slow breath, a wry smile playing at his lips. âI donât get it, man. You could be back in Alaska and up to your ass in willing she-wolves who would do just about anything to be the next queen. Hell, Christinaâs made no secret that she wants you for herself,â David said, referring to the she-wolf who was at the top of the kingâs potential daughter-in-law list and also happened to be the daughter of the general of their military. âThe entire society knows sheâs the most suitable choice for queen.â
âItâs a moot point.â Killian shrugged. âChristina doesnât bear the mark.â
âOh man.â David ran his hand over his head and rolled his eyes. âSo youâre telling me that youâre only gonna mate with some dream-woman who has the mark of the moon on her shoulder? With all due respect, she may not even exist.â
âI believe she does,â Killian said firmly. âDonât make me sorry I told you about that.â
âYeah.â David laughed. âIf it hadnât been for too much champagne the other night, you probably wouldnât have.â
âTrue.â Killian pointed at him with his fork before dropping it in the sink with the empty Chinese food container. âBut it doesnât change the fact that I have no intention of ever mating with Christina.â
âFine. Donât hook up with her,â David said quickly. âYou could be looking for your dream girl with the moon mark in wolf packs in the other territories, and instead youâre hanging around a coven of vampires. This city is crowded and dirty, and it stinks. I can only imagine what the stench will be like in the heat of summer.â He let out a sigh and shrugged, his voice edged with sadness. âDonât you miss the fresh air? The mountains? I mean, I donât know about you, but if I donât get to run as a wolf soon, I think Iâm gonna lose my fuckinâ mind. I know your father wants to improve relations with the vampiresâ¦butâ¦â
âWeâve run in Central Park.â
âItâs not the same, man, and you know it.â David looked at him earnestly. âIt still feels like weâre caged in. Thatâs what this city is, Killian. Itâs one enormous cage.â
Silence hung heavily between them and regret flickered over Davidâs face, showing he undoubtedly believed heâd been a bit too honest with the prince. Killian nodded slowly and stood to his full height, about a half a foot taller than David. The guard squared his shoulders and his jaw clenched, as though bracing for the how-dare-you flogging he obviously expected.
âWell, I did ask for honesty, didnât I?â Killian narrowed his eyes as a smile cracked his face. âI know my choices donât make sense to youâor anyone else, for that matterâbut I have my reasons.â
âThat reason wouldnât be named Sadie would it?â
âMaybe.â Killian kept his voice calm. Snagging a paper towel, he wiped his hands and leveled a serious stare at David. âAnd maybe the reason you donât mind going to the club is because of a certain DJ.â
âIâI donâtââ David paled.
âItâs fine, David.â Killianâs expression softened and he tossed the paper towel in the trash can. âMy point is that all of us have secrets. Your private life is your ownâ¦just like mine is.â
âUnderstood.â David stilled and paused before adding, âBut with all due respect, Iâm not the heir to the throne.â
âGood night, David.â Killian patted his friend on the shoulder and gave him a sad smile. âIâll see you in the morning.â
