you, Janice, but there’s
been an explosion at the plant. I need to be over there to help out. So you’ll
have the house to yourself. I’m sorry.”
Oh…now that’s just what I wanted to hear….
I
tried my best to put on a phony frown. “I’ll miss you,” I said. “Stay safe.”
I
watched him leave, not in his own car that was parked in the garage, but in a
SUV that someone else was driving.
Not
wasting time wondering why he didn’t drive himself to the plant, I rushed to
the mirror to check out my face. I grinned as I told myself I looked decent.
After all, I was only trying to impress my date tonight, not the whole freakin
world.
I
put on my new shirt. It fitted me well, though it was still lackluster by
vampire standards. I smoothed down my hair the best I could with my hands, at
the same time wishing that I had enough Carns to get it done nicely.
After
deciding to keep Mr. FreeCut’s chain on, I grabbed my purse and set off from
the house. Although still wearing my baggy pants and granny shoes, I comforted
myself with the fact that I was at least halfway decently dressed.
At
the train station, I placed my card into the machine and stated my destination.
But instead of the usual acceptance, I was distraught to see an unexpected
message flash up.
TRAIN
IN REPAIR: TWENTY DEGREE DELAY.
My
heart sank. No, you can't do this, I wanted to cry out.How in the hell was I going to meet my date? I’d never make it in
time!
There
was only one thing for it. I sprinted back to the house as fast as I could.
I
was going to have to borrow Mr. FreeCut’s car.
DATE
It
didn’t take me long to find his keys, which he'd left on the counter top. I
went to the garage, knowing that I could be in big trouble if Mr. FreeCut
returned before me and found his car gone. But right at that moment, I didn’t
care. All I could think of was my date.
Driving
came naturally to me, almost like I’d been doing it for a few years, even
though I didn’t remember any of it and this thing handled like a box on four
wheels. I followed the same road we'd taken earlier, encountering very few
other vehicles along the way until after clearing the rough neighborhood of DeathHouse.
Only
after crossing Slice Canyon did the traffic really start to increase. I eyed
the iconic buildings of downtown, all the time thinking of what Mr. FreeCut
might do if he got home before me and discovered that I'd 'borrowed' his
car without telling him.
Remembering
exactly the location of the parking garage, I parked the car and walked out
onto the shopping street. It was a far more bustling place at night. Struggling
along through the sea of physically flawless, finely dressed vampires, many more
of whom were lined up outside different clubs and restaurants, it took me about
a degree to reach DeathNail Club and Spirits.
I
waited directly beneath the club's bright neon sign, wondering how I would ever
be able to find Rob in such a crowd. Again, uninviting stares were thrown my
way by well-groomed vamps standing in line. But maybe it was a good thing I
stood out.
I
waited for what seemed like forever, staring at the beautiful haircuts of
several girls. Then I heard
somebody call out my name.
Turning
around, I gazed into the scarlet eyes of Rob.
“Hello,
Janice.”
We
hugged. His muscular arms sent a pleasurable chill down my spine.
“Glad
you showed up,” he said. “We’re really gonna have a fun time tonight.”
Pleasurably
dazed by his long red hair, perfect face, and slick outfit of maroon jeans
and black collared shirt with a
glow-in-the-dark snake on the front, I found it hard to speak.
“My
charm seems to stun you,” he laughed. Yes,
it most certainly did. “Well, it’s time to eat. Follow me.”
It
appeared he knew the restaurant and club host, which meant we were able to walk
right past the line. The guys on the door let us in without a wait.
We
were seated immediately in a luxurious booth. The airy restaurant reeked
