right,â I say, shuffling my feet. âTalonâs protection operation is just fuckinâ bullshit, Arrow. Having one ortwo people protect a woman by locking her up and moving her all the time isnât really the best plan Iâve ever heard.â
âI hear you. Youâve got only a few days left though, so just look after her until itâs no longer your problem. Your marker will be paid, and you wonât owe that bastard shit anymore.â
Just like I thought heâd say.
âYeah,â I sigh. âThanks, brother.â
âAnytime. You need me, Iâm there.â
âI know,â I say, nodding even though he canât see me. âAnd right back at you.â
âAnna wants to tell you something.â
I can hear the sound of him kissing her before handing her the phone.
âHey, Vinnie, howâs everything?â
âEverything is fine. Howâre things at home?â I ask her. I actually miss the women and their crazy antics, even though my hands are full over here dealing with Shay. I think the women would like her a lot, but I donât even want to consider why that makes me happy.
âThings are great. We miss you! Guess what happened the other night?â She snickers, then starts laughing before even telling me the story. I have a feeling this story is going to be like the penis cake incident. I listen as she rambles on about their night at Rift and how a woman was hitting on Lana but she had no clue, missing every hint, until the girl asked her to go home with her.
âAnd now youâre being the great friend you are and telling everyone?â
âHell yeah I am,â she replies, laughing. âItâs revenge for the pizza story she told everyone last time.â
âWell itâs not anyone who would follow a random Italianbackpacker back to her car and eat pizza out of her trunk when you didnât know how long it had been sitting there.â I pause. âOr who the girl even was.â
âAh, come on, live a little, Vinnie,â she says. âShe was Italian. She knew great pizza. So is Talonâs cousin hot? Are there any added benefits to the job, if you know what I mean?â
I pause, not wanting to tell her the truth, because then everyone would be on my case and assume I was being swayed by a pretty face.
âYouâre quiet, so Iâm assuming sheâs not very attractive and you donât want to be mean, or sheâs a total fucking babe and you donât want us to give you shit over it when you get home.â
âAnna,â I warn, giving it away.
âOh my god, sheâs a hottie,â she whispers. âAnd youâre stuck in a house with her with nothing else to do. Have you slept with her yet?â
âAnna, not a word,â I growl, now pacing up and down. âAnd no, I havenât. And I wonât be. So you can relax. And I didnât tell everyone your pizza story, so you can keep this to yourself.â
âOf course,â she says, sobering. âBut that excludes Arrow. You know that, right? Itâs old-lady law.â
I scrub my hand down my face in frustration. âThereâs nothing to tell, Anna.â
âTalonââ
âHas made it clear Iâm not to touch her in that way.â
Sheâs quiet for a few moments. âDo you like her?â
âAnna, I barely know her.â Which is the truth, but the answer to her question would be yes. Sheâs beautiful and has a fire in her that I love to play with. âI gotta go, all right? Talk soon. Take care of Arrow for me.â
âAlways,â she replies.
We both hang up. I rub the back of my neck, knowing I have only one option to save Shay, but itâs the one Iâm most reluctant to take.
Sheâs already getting under my skinâI can feel it.
