souls that Aden inadvertently sucked inside his head.â Maybe, they thought, hoped.
âYouâre sure? Maybe they died nearby, and their names arenât there.â
âA possibility, I guess.â One she wouldnât entertain at the moment. âThrough my research, Iâve managed to cross off more than half the names already.â
âThat seems excessive.â
Not really. âThe remaining souls are male, so that automatically eliminated the females.â
Tucker arched a brow. âUnless theyâre transgender souls. I mean, really. Aden seems like the type to host a pink panty party inside hisââ
âTucker.â
âWhat? He does . And his friend Shannon is as gay asââ
â Shut. Up. The males possess the same special abilities now that they possessed when they were alive. I know this because my mother did, too. So Iâve been going through the names, looking for stories about raising the dead, body possession and predicting death. Even the minutest hint.â
He thought for a moment. âBacktrack a little. Why exactly do you want to identify the souls?â
âBecause they need to remember what their last wish was, and do it. Then, theyâll leave Aden and heâll be stronger, able to concentrate and defend himself from Vlad.â
âYou really think that will help?â
âWhat is this? Twenty questions? Hell, yes, I do.â She had to. Otherwise her friendâs chances were nil.
Once again Tucker was blinking down at her. âMary Ann, you just cussed.â
â Hell isnât a cuss word.â
âTo me it is.â
âWhy? Because youâre afraid of spending eternity there?â
Good humor, gone. âSomething like that.â
He looked so sad, she actually felt bad for her waspishness. âMaybe, by the time this is over, Iâll have earned myself a spot right next to you. We can keep each other company while roasting.â
He barked out a laugh, as sheâd hoped, but that earned them another glare from Hush Girl. He flipped HG off and said to Mary Ann, âYou wish Iâd spend eternity with you. So, you got any leads?â
âBefore you interrupted meââ she paused, waiting for an apology, but of course he didnât offer one ââIwas reading a story about a mortician at the hospital. Dr. Daniel Smart. Apparently he was murdered there. Defense wounds on his arms and legs, as if heâd rolled into a ball to protect himself while someoneââ or something ââbit and punched him.â
âGreat story. But what does that have to do with Adenâs souls?â
âOne of them can raise the dead. What if Dr. Smart raised a dead body in the morgue, and it killed him?â
âBut wouldnât he have raised a dead body before? And if he had, why would he have continued to work there? He would have been in constant danger, and his secret would have gotten out. But it didnât, which means he didnât.â
âMaybe he could control the ability.â
âMaybe he couldnât.â
âI donât care what you say,â she grumbled, hating that he was right. Again. âThis is the best lead Iâve got.â
âOur definition for the word best differs. Still,â Tucker went on blithely, âitâs worth checking out.â
âI know.â How irritating! As if she needed his permission. âThatâs next on my To Do list.â
âWhat about his parents?â
âWho, Smartâs?â
Tucker rolled his eyes. âNo, moron. Adenâs.â
âWhat about them?â Their current address was burning a hole in her pocket. Finding them had been first on that To Do list sheâd mentioned, in fact, and sheâd already crossed it off with shocking ease. A search engine, a (stolen) credit card Tucker had given her, and boom. Results.
