if she believed that Loki and Katia had once shared a love far deeper than Gaiaâs real parents had ever known, that Tom might have been responsible for Katiaâs death, and most important that Loki rightfully belonged in Gaiaâs life . . . well, then, Loki might just hold the key that would unlock Gaiaâs heart forever. Then she would be his. Finally his.
âI . . . I â I had no idea,â Gaia stammered, staring down at the crumb-littered tablecloth.
âOf course not,â Loki murmured. âWhy would your mother and father tell you such a thing? Itâs too awful.â
Gaia nodded absently. âYou know . . . it makes sense,â she whispered.
Yes. Loki felt a stirring in his chest. Follow these feelings, Gaia , he silently implored, staring down at her. Trust your instincts .
âIt makes sense that my father never mentioned you to me,â she finished.
Loki nodded gravely. âHe had good reason.â
Gaia shook her head and ran her hands through her hair. âI . . . I donât know what Iâm even feeling right now.â She laughed bitterly. âI mean, I thought my current family situation was screwed up.â
An alarm instantly went off in Lokiâs brain. Ella . So Gaiaâs home life was falling apart, as he suspected. He knew now for certain that Ellaâs carelessness had destroyed Gaiaâs lone bastion of stability. And now the woman was out gallivanting around town, stalking that moronic boy whom Gaia prized so much. Loki fought back rage. Ellaâs little extracurricular activities were about to end. âWhat do you mean?â he demanded.
She glanced up at him, then paused.
âYou know you can tell me anything, Gaia,â he said, careful to keep the urgency out of his voice. âThatâs why Iâm here. Thatâs why I gave you my number.â
Gaia nodded. âI know. Itâs just . . . Okay, this is going to sound really weird. But I have this feeling that my foster mother isnât who she seems to be.â
âWhat do you mean?â he pressed.
âWe got into this fight,â Gaia blurted out. The words exploded from her mouth and kept coming, as if a dam had been blown. âThe thing is, Ella goes out of her way to pretend sheâs this trashy bimbo. But sheâs not. Sheâs trained in martial arts. Sheâs got a secret life. She nearly beat the shit out â oops.â Gaiaâs face reddened. âI didnât mean to curse.â
Loki waved his hand dismissively and leaned across the table. âDonât worry about it. I curse, too. So what youâre saying is that Ella attacked you.â
Gaia nodded. âYeah. But luckily Iâm a good fighter, too. Dad taught me a lot.â
It took all of Lokiâs self-control to sit there and maintain his sympathetic expression. Heâd never known a fury greater than the one he felt now. A million scenarios of torture and retribution whirled through his mind. He would make Ella pay for this. There was no turning back now. This was Ellaâs final mistake. He would do what he should have done long ago. Sheâd been assigned to protect Gaia. His eyes flashed to the slight bruise on Gaiaâs cheek. My God . At first he had attributed it to the scuffle heâd witnessed outside the restaurant. But now he knew better.
âElla attacked you,â Loki repeated, his voice slightly above a whisper. âYour legal guardian attacked you.â
âWell, I mean, it wasnât out of the blue,â Gaia muttered. She buried her face in her hands. âShe just pisses me off so much. Sheâs . . . disgusting, awful. I canât stand her. I hate living there. I hate it.â
Loki found himself reaching for his niece, almost instinctively. He gently massaged her shoulder. âIâm so sorry, Gaia,â he said, his voice thick with emotion. âI had no idea your living situation was so bad. If
