against Anderson.“
„It just happens that things will work out that way very nicely if you get me, is that it?“ she taunted
fiercely, trying to maintain a bold front in the face of his newest attack. „How dare you insult my mental
capacity by implying that this great passion you’ve conceived for me didn’t have its roots in the fact that I
    was dating Richard!“
„I can’t deny that if I hadn’t been out to get Anderson I probably wouldn’t have even met you. That’s a
    straightforward fact,“ he began carefully.
„And you can’t deny that your initial interest in me was based on the idea that I could be used in your
    game plan!“
„I could, but I won’t, because you obviously wouldn’t believe me,“ he tossed back coolly.
„Tell me the truth, York!“ she demanded bitterly.
He hesitated. „Selena, the only thing that matters tonight is that I want you, and I think, if you’re honest
with yourself, you want me.“ He touched her lips with the edge of his ringer when she opened her mouth to
argue. „Please don’t refuse to admit we’re attracted to each other. That much I can force from you and
we both know it. If you insist on pushing me, I might lose my patience and resort to doing exactly that.“
She lifted her chin in defiance. She knew she couldn’t deny the fascination she felt for him, but she
could demand a price for admitting it. „I suggest we both exchange a little honesty,“ she bit out tightly. „Tell
me the full truth about why you became interested in me and I’ll admit what you want to hear!“
„You’re trying to hurt both of us,“ he muttered raspingly.
„I can take it,“ she flung back boldly. „It’s worth it for some genuine honesty!“
„The kind of honesty you never had from Anderson?“ he said, slipping in the knife with practiced ease.
That particular truth struck a sensitive nerve. „Exactly!“ she whispered furiously. „I broke off my
relationship with him the moment you walked out of my door last night, York. Does that give you any
satisfaction? Your tactics were entirely and totally effective. I’ll never see him again.“
She saw the satisfaction in his face, felt it in the arm that tightened around her body. His hand splayed
possessively along her thigh. „Thank God for that much, at least,“ he growled.
„But,“ she raged on, keeping her tone low with an incredible effort, „I’m not about to replace one lying
male with another! So tell me the truth, damn it!“
„What does it matter why I first decided I had to have you? The end result is the same, you little fool.
There’s another side to the coin, you know. If you hadn’t sensed I was out to crush the man you were with,
you wouldn’t have tried so hard to ignore me. If you’d been honest with me and with yourself, you wouldn’t
have run from me! You didn’t owe him any loyalty, Selena, surely you can see that now….“
„Oh, yes, I can see it,“ she cried furiously. „You made certain I learned the full truth, but don’t expect
me to thank you for it!“
„Are you longing for Anderson, Selena?“ he demanded harshly.
„No! How could I long for a liar and a cheat? I wouldn’t waste my time. He tried to make me play a
role I once swore I would never get involved with and I’ll never forgive him for that. He was no better than
the man I married three years ago. And neither are you!“
„You’re really out for blood tonight, aren’t you?“ he breathed in a wondering voice, the green of his eyes
turning very hard. „The question is, who are you going to wind up drawing it from? Me or yourself? You
want an admission that the first time I saw you I wanted to take you away from Anderson? You’ve got it I’
ll freely admit it You want me to say that the reason I wanted to take you away from him was because I
saw it as a small, psychological victory over the man that would eventually make the final win all the
    sweeter? You’ve got it. I
