Glen manag ed the sales department.
“ I’ll be right with you, ” he mouthed, then went on to continue his conversation.
While sipping his coffee, Ashton studied the thirty-three year old, divorced father of three. Dark hair, blue eyes. It was because of him and his sale s team's hard work that he was expanding and opening a second dealership in Wilmington, Delaware.
“ Hey boss, tell Roy congratulations for me. I thought you were taking the day off? ” Glen sai d as he returned the phone to the receiver.
Ashton nodded and pushed away from the d oorjamb , strolling further into his office. “ I am , but I wanted to talk to you about something. ” He waited until he lowered onto the chair across from Glen’s curious expres sion before continuing. “ The woman who’ s suing me … is there any chance she could be telling the truth? ”
Glen laughed like his question was ridiculous. “ Like I said before, there’s no way in hell. ” Leaning forward, he removed a manila folder from a basket o n the desk, and held it out for him. “ Take a look for yourself. ”
After taking a few moments to thumb through the file, Ashton scowled. Glen was right. The odometer reading on the car had been 8 3 2 56 when bought at auction and thirty miles more at purchase. The additional miles included the twenty he required of his mechanics for a final test drive before vehicles were p laced on the lot.
Ashton blew out a breath. He was frustrated and he knew why. He liked Kaelyn . He liked her a lot and had been hoping for a simple solution, maybe something that had been overlooked , resulting in one big mis understanding . “Shit.”
    “ W hat’ s up? ”
With a roll of the eyes, he replied, “ T he h earing is scheduled for the week after the Fourth. ”
Glen tossed him a dismissive wave. “ It’s a slam dunk. You have nothing to worry about. ”
Ashton shook his head. “ I’m not so sure about that. Not only did Jaden Beaumont personally inspect her car and r u n a Car Fax report , but he also agreed to testify in court on her behalf someone tampered with he r odometer. ”
Glen sat up tall on the chair. “ What? ”
He nodded between sips. They both knew Jaden Beaumont had a reputation for being one of the best mechanics in the country.
Glen slumped over the desk , his expression bleak . “ What are we going to do? ”
“ I don ’t know. If our documentation is correct , then the only defense we have is the car was tampered with before we purchased it. ”
Glen scratched his head. “ You want me to check and see if there has been any other suspicious tampering at the auction? ”
Ashton shifted on his chair and nodded. “ I’m going to print a Car F ax report and track down the previous owner. Hopefully , they will remember how many miles were on the car when he or she sold it. ” Glen looked like he had a suggestion , but Ashton interrupted bef ore he could respond. “ I don ’t want to walk in court looking like an idiot. If this can be re solved , then let’s get it re solved. ” With a sigh of resignation , Ashton stood and crossed to the door. He paused, his hand on the doorknob. “ For personal reasons I prefer to settle this out of court. ”
Glen nodded. “ I’ll see what I can turn up. ”
Ashton strolled o ut of the office still holding the folder in his hand. There was no way he could be wrong about Kaelyn. Last night had been special ; he wasn’t going to allow a lawsuit to come between them.
He took a seat behind his large oak desk , swiveled around in his chair and stared out across the lot. It had taken him five years to build his business and he did it with integrity and good business practices and that wasn’ t going to change , not as far as he was concerned. Someone had messed with that car and he planned to get to the bottom of the problem.
While he sipped from the cup , he thought about the last few hours and felt something warm st ir at the pit of his stomach . Lying
