how to respond to the invitation. Sheâd met Russ and Melanie a few times and didnât want to refuse his generous offer, but she wasnât sure sheâd feel comfortable sitting down at a table with people she barely knew.
âThanks for the invite,â Corey said, coming to her rescue. âBut Erin and I have other plans.â
âYouâre sure?â Russ pressed.
âPositive. But please thank Melanie for us.â
His friend nodded. âI will. And I hope youâll find your way out here again before you head back to Texas.â
âYou can count on it,â Corey said, shaking his hand firmly.
The rancher tipped his hat to Erin, then led the horses into the barn.
Â
âHow are you holding up?â Corey asked when they were back in his truck and heading away from the ranch.
âNot too badly,â she said.
âYou should take a hot bath before you go to bed tonight,â he suggested. âIt will help ease any soreness in your muscles.â
âThat sounds like a wonderful idea.â She tipped her head back and closed her eyes as if she was imagining herself sinking into a tub filled with bubbles.
Or maybe he just assumed that was what was on her mind because it was on his.
âAnd if it doesnât work, Iâll call Stefan in the morning and see if he can squeeze me in for a quickie during my lunch.â
âStefan? A quickie?â
She laughed. âA quick massage,â she clarified.
âOh.â But his frown deepened. âDonât they have women who give massages?â
âOf course. But Stefan has the most amazing hands.â
âAnd you let him put them all over your body?â
âI pay him to put them all over my body.â She didnât usually engage in this kind of flirtatious banter, but Coreyâs reaction to her statement was so typically and possessively male, she couldnât resist teasing him a little. âAnd heâs worth every penny.â
âI could do the same thingâfor free.â
She lifted a brow. âShow me your diploma, cowboy.â
âWell, no oneâs ever called it a diploma, butââ
She laughed. âI was referring to a professional accreditation. Stefan trained in Sweden.â
âI graduated from Texas A&M,â he said, flicking on his indicator.
Instead of heading in the direction Erin lived, he turned the opposite way.
âWhere are we going?â she asked, more curious than concerned.
âI told Russ we had plans for dinner,â he reminded her. âYou donât want to make a liar out of me, do you?â
âI just donât want you to feel obligatedââ
âErin.â
She frowned at the interruption.
âYou seem to be forgetting that Iâm the one who tracked you down this morning and pretty much blackmailed you into spending the day with me.â
âYou did, didnât you?â
âWhich should prove that if I didnât want to be with you, I wouldnât be.â
âOkay,â she finally said, but the furrow in her brow deepened when he pulled into the parking lot of the Super Saver Mart, still referred to by a lot of the locals as the Thunder Canyon Mercantile. âThis is where weâre going for dinner?â
He chuckled. âThis is where weâre going to get the ingredients for dinner.â
She looked at him suspiciously.
âNo, I donât expect you to cook dinner for me,â he said be fore she could ask. âIâm going to cook for you.â
âYou are?â
âWhy do you sound so surprised?â
âI guess because I am,â she admitted, as they made their way toward the entrance. âNo man has ever cooked me dinner before.â
He eyed her warily. âAre you one of thoseâwhat do they call themâvegetarians or vegans or whatever?â
The tone of his voice left her in no doubt what this manfrom cattle
