at the tux and the makeup. âWho are you pretending to be?â
âCiull Yu,â Six said.
âWhoâs that?â
He shrugged. âSome guy.â
âYu looks a bit like you,â Kyntak said, deadpan.
Six didnât laugh. âActually, I donât look much like Yu at all.â
âWeâre identical twins. You
do
look like me.â
âI look like me, but older,â Six said. âDoesnât matter what Yu looks like.â
Kyntak grinned. âWhat can I do for you, Six?â
âI just wanted to thank you for saving my life,â Six said. âAgain.â
âDonât sweat it,â Kyntak said. âIt was nothing personal. With you alive, ChaoSonic only spends half its resources hunting me.â
âHalf?â Six snorted. âMore like 30 per cent, maximum.â
âWell, maybe Iâm not as much of a troublemaker as you,â Kyntak said. He leaned back in his chair. âSo whatâs the new mission?â
âThe last nuclear warhead in the world has gone missing. Iâm supposed to find it.â
âIn a tux?â
âIn a tux.â
Kyntak raised an eyebrow. âSomething tells me you oversimplified that.â
âA little,â Six admitted. âBut Iâve got a favour to ask.â
âIf itâs paying for the dry-cleaning after youâve covered that suit in blood, brick dust and plutonium, you can forget it.â
âThis is serious,â Six said. He fell into the chair opposite Kyntakâs desk. âThis is an unpredictable mission â and I might not survive it.â
âYou say that every time,â Kyntak pointed out.
Six nodded. âBecause every mission I do is dangerous. Thatâs my point â one day, I wonât make it.â
Kyntak wasnât smiling now. âWhatâs this about?â
âI need your word that when I die, youâll take over,â Six said. âYouâll get the mission done, and keep protecting the City when Iâm gone.â
Kyntakâs wall clock ticked through the quiet.
âSix,â Kyntak said finally, âthatâs not a favour. Thatâs exactly what Iâd do, and you know it.â He stood up. âButyou also know that I could never do your job as well as you do. Iâve got your DNA, but not your willpower.â He paused. âSo donât die, okay? We still need you.â
Six hesitated, and then hugged him awkwardly. âSee you when I get back,â he said.
âCareful!â Kyntak smoothed down his T-shirt where it had touched the tux. âYouâll mess up my outfit.â
King had arranged a car for Six and Ace to drive to the party; an old six-cylinder ChaoSonic Peak. Six took the lift down to the parking garage to get it.
Ace was leaning against a pillar, looking at her watch. She wore a shimmering red gown and matching stilettos. Around her neck there was a silver filigree choker with a sparkling diamond pendant. Her curled blonde hair looked the way Six imagined sunshine must have looked in the days before the fog smothered it.
She glanced over, and saw Six staring. âBuzz off,â she said. âIâm meeting someone.â
âYes,â Six said. âMe.â
Ace stared for a moment. Then she laughed. âOh, sorry, Six! Jack did a heck of a job on you.â She moved closer, examining his face. âYou still look kind of like you, I guess, but in your late twenties,â she said. âExcept physically, youâre never going to get that old. So itâs like a window into the future youâll never have.â
âI like your dress,â Six said. âWhereâd you get the diamonds?â
Ace winked. âTheyâre cubic zirconia. But no-one will get close enough to tell.â
âCan you run in those shoes?â
âWill I need to?â
âCall it professional curiosity,â Six said.
