it was also unnecessary.
Well done.
âHe proposed to me in the same ER where we first met. It was sweet.â Cass shrugged and then pointed to a ring in the case. âCan I see that one?â

A part of Cass felt a bit bad about embarrassing Alex like she had. But a larger part couldnât help but enjoy tormenting him every chance she got. Especially when he was such a good sport about it. Heâd quickly recovered from Cassâ tale and had given his opinion on a few of the rings. Since Quinnâs diamond was square with some small stones on either side, Cass had chosen several rings to try on that looked similar enough to Quinnâs that Tessa hopefully wouldnât notice the difference.
Cass slid the first one on her ring finger, letting herself adjust to the feeling of it. She held out her hand, admiring how the diamond sparkled on her.
âI like it,â Alex said as he leaned comfortably against the jewelry case to face her. âWhat do you think?â
âI actually think the band on this oneâs a little too thick. It feelsââshe searched for the appropriate wordââintrusive.â
âWell, how much are you really going to wear it? I mean, you donât plan to wear it to work or anything, right?â
Cameron furrowed his brow, obviously confused.
âDonât be silly,â Cass replied. âI can wear it to work. Itâs not like Iâm doing surgery anymore.â
âNo, you certainly arenât doing any surgery,â Alexreplied. âDo you have a band thatâs a little thinner?â he asked Cameron.
Cameron handed two rings to Cass and placed the rest back in the case. âThe others will be too big for your taste, I think. See how you like these.â
âThis oneâs pretty.â Cass opened and closed her hand a few times. âAnd it feels comfortable. How much?â
âThis particular setting is platinum, and the diamond is a little over a carat. The clarity is superb,â Cameron said. âThis one is forty-two hundred.â
Cass winced at the price. âDo you have anything under two thousand? Maybe something thatâs less than a carat?â she asked. âAnd it doesnât even need to be platinum. Silver would be fine. No one will be able to tell the difference, right?â
Cameronâs gaze snapped over to Alex and then back to Cass. âWith all due respect, this a major purchase. Itâs a symbol of your love for each other. Most women donât want a silver engagement ring. We actually donât even carry any here.â
âWell, Iâm different from most women.â Cass shrugged. âMaterial possessions arenât really that important to me. But I do recognize that a ring is a rite of passage. Weâre going to split the cost,â Cass said, motioning between herself and Alex. âBut thatâs a little out of our price range. Still trying to pay off those medical-school loans on a professorâs salary,â she added quickly. âMaybe you have a diamond thatâs a little more . . . cloudy?â
Cameron raised a brow. âI do have this setting in white gold. We could put a smaller . . . cloudier diamond in there. It would probably bring the cost down about fifteen hundred dollars or so.â Cameron looked at them expectantly, probably wondering if he hadhad to listen to a story about another manâs penis only to have them leave the store empty-handed.
Cass stared at the ring, trying to decide if it was worth the money to her. Sure, she had a well-paying job and
could
buy it. But now, with such a major decision staring her right in the face, she couldnât decide if she should go through with it. Maybe Alex was right about not really needing a ring.
âWeâll take it,â Alex blurted out.
Or maybe he
wasnât
right.
âAnd put the whole thing on my
