lengthwise along the pastry dough.
Brush the egg wash around these mounds, using about half of the egg wash.
Carefully lay 1 sheet of pastry over this stack and use your hands to gently mold the pastry over the mounds so that theyâre very visible.
Brush with more melted butter, covering the entire sheet.
Now lay the other 3 sheets on top, 1 at a time, being careful to keep the liver mounds rounded and visible.
Use a pizza wheel to cut the stack into 6 even squares.
There will be excess around each mound. One at a time, brush the outer edges of each square with more egg wash and use your hands to crimp the outer edges inward into a roughly round, almost pie-crust edging.
As each one is molded, place it on the baking sheet. Repeat for the remaining sections.
Baste with any remaining butter and bake for 15â17 minutes, or just until golden.
Serve warm.
PALE PURPLE MELON
SERVES 10â12
The pale purple melon Katniss spied on the lavish table in the Capitol was probably genetically engineered. It certainly doesnât exist in nature as we know it, but you can engineer it, too.
This recipe is very sweet, so itâs best left for decorative purposes or the taste buds of very young kids. It does look remarkable, so it is great for a Hunger Games -themed party.
½ CUP SUGAR
1 PACKET UNSWEETENED GRAPE DRINK MIX
½ CUP HOT WATER
2 CUPS WATER
1 HONEYDEW MELON, SLICED INTO ½-INCH SLICES
In a large measuring cup, combine sugar and drink mix packet, and then add in hot water.
Stir well until sugar is melted.
Add cold water and pour into a 9 x 13-inch glass baking dish.
Place the melon slices in a single layer in the dish and let sit for 15 minutes.
Turn the slices over and let sit another 15 minutes.
Remove the slices and place into a re-sealable plastic bag.
Carefully pour the drink mixture into the bag and seal tightly.
Place back onto the baking dish and put in the fridge for at least 2 hours, shaking the bag up at least once.
To serve, remove the melon, drain on paper towels and then arrange on a platter.
BACKPACK TREASURE DRIED FRUITS
ABOUT 4 SERVINGS
When Katniss is able to steal a backpack from one of the Careers, she finds a bounty of dried fruits to sustain her.
Drying fruits is easy, but takes some time. This recipe will keep well in a tightly closed jar or airtight re-sealable plastic bag for up to two weeks. Use very ripe fruits for the best flavor.
4 MEDIUM GRANNY SMITH APPLES, PEELED AND SLICED THINLY
4 BARTLETT PEARS, PEELED AND SLICE THINLY
6 WHOLE APRICOTS, UNPEELED, SLICED THINLY
Preheat oven to 150 degrees.
Line 3 baking sheets with parchment paper.
Spread the apples on the first, the pears on the second and the apricots on the third.
Place all of the pans in the oven and dry for about 10 hours.
The apples and pears should be pliable but quite dry. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool.
Allow the apricots to continue drying for about another 2 hours, or until quite dry but still pliable. Remove and allow them to cool.
Mix all of the fruits and store in an airtight container.
Makes about 2 cups.
DISTRICT 12 JERKY
SERVES 8
Venison was a rare treat in District 12, and Katniss was able to sell deer meat at a good price. Since meat was scarce and conditions were somewhat primitive, what couldnât be eaten fresh was preserved.
Drying or jerking was a popular way to preserve and serve venison in the real Appalachia, and it results in a deliciously different snack.
