windshield.
âHeâs mad,â Beezel said.
The tiny man shook his fist and cursed at them from the driverâs seat.
âSuch language! Little man, there are young ladies present!â Uncle Hoogaboom scolded Slear. He turned to them. âLetâs get this over with. Youâll need to stand back.â
They moved away from the little black car. Hector quickly surveyed the street. âThe coast is clear.â
Uncle Hoogaboom pointed. Zuuft. A full-sized car was parked in front of them.
âYouâve had a slight car accident,â Uncle Hoogaboom said to Slear as he leaned inside the driverâs window. âAre you all right?â
âThat was no accident, pal,â Slear yelled in his face, causing Uncle Hoogaboom to stand up and take a step back. âYou ⦠you
shrank
me!
And
this car!â Slear shot a look at Mimi. âAnd that kid changed a dog into a rock!â
âIt was a clam,â corrected Mimi.
Beezel elbowed her. âShh!â
âWhatever it was,â Slear said, âit was
real
honestto-goodness-presto-chango
magic!â
He spotted Wiliken standing behind Hector. âAnd youâre in on it, arenât you, star boy?â
âPlease stop calling me that,â Wiliken said through clenched teeth.
Slear ignored him. âFinally! Iâve hit the jackpot! Ka-ching!â He let out a war whoop. âIâm going to have plenty to say about this, you can bet your life!â Slear grinned at them.
âHe
looks
as happy as a clam,â Hector muttered.
âMimi, youâd better get your watch,â Beezel said. She whispered to Uncle Hoogaboom, âMimiâs a great hypnotist.â
âThat must come in very handy,â Uncle Hoogaboom said thoughtfully.
Mimi reached inside her sleeve to get Grandpa Trimoniâs watch. She waved it at Slear. âYou are getting sleepy,â she said.
âOh no Iâm
not
,â Slear said. âYouâre not taking this story from me, sister!â He grabbed a camera from a bag on the seat next to him.
âMimi, itâs not working,â Beezel said nervously.
âSome people are more difficult to convince than others,â Uncle Hoogaboom said. âIâll zuuft him again. Weâll take him home until we can think ofsomething.â He sighed as he lifted his arm to point at Slear.
âOh no you donât!â Slear thrust a camera out the car window and pointed the cameraâs flash at Uncle Hoogaboomâs face. âTake that, old man!â The light strobed on and off several times.
Uncle Hoogaboom dropped his hand and staggered backward into Hector and Wiliken.
âAnd now you two!â Slear quickly turned his flashing camera on the startled twins.
âKa-poof him, Beezel! I canât see a thing! Heâs blinded me!â wailed Mimi.
âI canât see either!â All Beezel could see was a bright white light pulsing on and off. The light had driven the five magic words temporarily out of her head. The only thought in her head now was to turn off that darn light. Beezel heard a car engine start and the squeal of tires as the black car pulled away from them.
Beezel heard Slear yell, âThis is way bigger than you, Riebeeck! When I break this story, itâs gonna be huge!â
After a few minutes, they could all see properly again.
âThis is terrible,â Beezel said. âSlear knows aboutthe magic of the Shrinking Coin
and
the Changing Coin!â
âIâm so sorry,â said Wiliken. âIf it werenât for me, Slear wouldnât even be here.â
âOh, I wouldnât worry too much about that,â Uncle Hoogaboom said. âItâs just his word against ours. He really canât prove anything without our cooperation now, can he?â
âWell, no.â Beezel knew he was right, but still, she had a tennis ball of worry in the pit of her stomach. But Uncle
