her hand on Finnâs back.
âMillieâ¦â Davidâs voice drifted over from a few yards away, the warning clear.
âIâm just making conversation,â the older woman said.
âIâm Amber,â she said, putting on her broadest smile. She stepped forward, hand outstretched, as she pretended sheâd never seen Millie before, much less had her, David, and Jacey investigated. âFinnâs my next-door neighbor.â
âIsnât that nice, dear.â The older woman took her hand off Finnâs back so she could swing her entire arm around his shoulders. âDid I hear you say youâre taking a taxi home?â
Amber nodded. âMy friend drove us here. Well, a few blocks away, actually. I was just walking when I stumbled on your yard sale.â Now there was a doozy. No one walked in Los Angeles if they could help it.
âNonsense,â Millie said, and for a moment Amber thought sheâd been caught in a lie. âI wouldnât dream of you taking a taxi. Finn can drive you home, canât you, Finn?â
Amber smiled at Finn. âThatâs a very sweet offer, but I wouldnât want to put you out,â she said, though thatâs exactly what she wanted to do. More than that, even. Finn hardly seemed like the type to play hard to get. So if everything went as planned, sheâd have run through her basic flirting repertoire by dinner and be in his bed by midnight. Barring unforeseen circumstances, she should have a better handle on who Finn was, where he came from, and who he was working for before the morning paper landed on his doorstep.
Surprisingly, the thought made her a little sad.
âIt actually wasnât my offer,â Finn said. âBut Iâm happy to drive you home. Weâre going to the same place, after all.â
âRight,â she said. She met his eyes, saw amusement reflected there, and this time the smile that touched her lips was genuine. She liked this guy, which worked out well considering she was probably going to end up sleeping with him. Sheâd do what was necessary to get the job done, but if the guy wasnât a dud, that made it so much more palatable.
And Phineus Teague was definitely no dud. The man intrigued her. She might not be interested in a relationship, but she wasnât about to pass up a good time. Especially not one that was sanctioned by her job.
Sheâd watched Finn long enough to know the way his hips moved under his jeans, and the way his eyes crinkled when he smiled. He was quick to laugh, had an easygoing grin, and seemed to ooze testosterone. Unless she missed her bet, Phineus Teague knew his way around a woman, and Amber was looking forward to letting him practice his navigation skills.
Oh, yes. If she had to pull Mata Hari duty, she certainly could have done worse. As it was, she intended to thoroughly enjoy this project.
âYou donât have to leave right now, do you?â Millie asked, closing a warm hand over Amberâs wrist.
âI hope not,â David said. âI just roped Finn into helping with the sale.â He slipped his arm around Jaceyâs waist. âSince youâve appropriated my help, Iâve been running this show alone.â
Millie sniffed. âIf recollection serves, this sale was your idea in the first place.â She took a step backward and clasped Jaceyâs hand. âAnd Jacey needs her rest.â
Amberâs gaze swept over the groupâMillieâs protective stance, Jaceyâs tinted cheeks, Davidâs proud eyesâ¦and Finnâs clueless stare. âCongratulations,â she said to Jacey.
Jaceyâs face lit up. âThanks. Obvious?â
Amber shook her head. âIâm just a good guesser.â
Finnâs brow furrowed and he swiveled his head, shifting his gaze from Amber to Jacey and back again. âWhat am I missing?â
Jacey leaned over and gave him a quick kiss on
