why sell the paintingââ
âAnd the house,â Michael interjected.
Angus nodded. âAnd the house. Why sell both of those right now? Is she trying to get away from something?â
Suki shrugged. âMaybe she just needs money.â
âFor what?â Angus pondered. âWhatâs changed recently in Doreeneâs life?â
âReynaldo seems to be a new addition,â Michael said. âMaybe he wants her to buy a big ranch in Brazil and move there with him.â
Angus nodded slightly. âThatâs a possibility. Of course, he says he wants her to destroy the painting, not sell it.â
âMaybe the new thing is a fight between the sisters, and Doreene is trying to punish Maureene,â Suki said. âSo sheâs selling the portrait and the house.â
âWhat we need is a good source of local gossip.â Angus spotted their server approaching with the food. âAfter we eat, I think we should take a tour of Port Townsendâs art galleries.â
*Â Â Â *Â Â Â *
Port Townsendâs main street had no fewer than five art galleries. They were in the fourth when Angus paused before the portrait of a young man. âHenry Gray, by Maureene Pinter,â he murmured, pointing to the small placard below the painting.
âAs in Hank Gray, Doreeneâs dead husband?â Michael wondered. He leaned in to see the card. âFifty-seven thousand dollars.â
Angus put his hands in his jacket pockets and studied the portrait. The subjectâs curly brown hair was ruffled by wind. One hand gripped a rope, and more rigging and the sea were visible over his shoulder. His blue eyes seemed to look directly at the viewer. âThis is very good.â
âI hope so,â Suki said. âThatâs a chunk of change for two square feet of canvas.â She studied the portrait. âHe looks kind of familiar, but maybe itâs just the setting. I had a really good time at the Americaâs Cup one year.â
A smiling woman in a linen pantsuit approached. Somewhere in her midfifties, her round face was weathered and pink cheeked, as though she might be a sailor herself. âIsnât it wonderful? In addition to being a superb work of art, that painting should be a very good investment. One of Maureene Pinterâs other works is about to be auctioned through Rothwellâs. The value of her work should rise significantly.â
Angus beamed at her. âItâs exciting, isnât it? Weâre staying at the house.â
The womanâs smile remained, but uncertainty tinged her voice. âMaureeneâs house?â
âWell, it wonât be hers for long, with the property being put on the market.â
The woman looked flabbergasted. âMaureene is leaving Port Townsend?â
âI donât know what her plans are. Doreene is the one selling the place.â Angus shook his head sadly. âBetween you and me, Maureene isnât very happy about it.â
âButâ¦â The gallery owner seemed overwhelmed by this information. âI thought their stepfather left everything to Maureene.â
âI donât understand it myself,â Angus said confidingly. âFirst the painting, now the house.â He leaned down and dropped his voice further. âWhat do you think Doreene needs all that money for?â
Her expression turned frigid. âIâm sorry, I didnât catch your name.â
He offered his hand. âAngus MacGregor, Tripping magazine. Do you have any opinion on what powers the portrait of Doreene Gray has?â
She pulled her hand from his. âI donât. Excuse me.â
They watched as she walked the length of the gallery and disappeared through a side door.
âNot the hot gossip you hoped for, huh?â Michael asked.
âYou never know until you try.â Angus tilted his head in the direction the gallery owner had gone.
