I wore my purity necklace, although Aunt Dani continued to try and talk me out of it. I thought I looked really goodâmature but not too oldâand Momma agreed when I modeled the outfit for her. Candy seemed to like the outfit, too.
âWell, I guess Iâm ready,â I said, glancing at the clock. Allen was supposed to arrive at seven, so I still had a few minutes. âDo you think we should add some extra practices next week? I want to make sure weâre ready for regionals,â I said.
âSounds good,â Candy said, looking distracted.
I touched her shoulder. âHey, whatâs going on with you? Are you sure youâre okay?â
Candy took a deep breath. âI need to tell you something,â she said, âbut I donât want you to get mad at me or think Iâm trying to ruin your relationship.â
âOkay,â I said slowly. For some reason the way Candy had acted toward Allen when we saw him near the fountain flashed through my mind. I wondered if she was going to tell me she liked Allenâor worse, they had dated.
âI know someone who used to date Allen,â she confessed.
âGirl, is that whatâs been bothering you?â I said, and laughed. âEverybody has history. What Allen did before we dated doesnât concern me.â I picked up my purse and checked it to make sure I had all my essentials, including my cell phone and my emergency twenty-dollar bill.
âBut thatâs just it, it does concern youâor at least it might,â she said.
âCandy, whatâs going on? Just tell me,â I insisted, tired of her beating around the bush.
She grabbed my hand. âCourtland, my friend said that Allen used to hit her.â
I couldnât help it. I burst into laughter. âThatâs your big secret? Girl, please. Allen wouldnât hurt a fly.â
âBut why would she lie about something like that?â Candy asked.
I stopped laughing, realizing she was serious. âLet me ask you something,â I said. âDid Allen break up with her, or did she break up with him?â
âWhat does that have to do with anything?â Candy asked.
âJust answer the question,â I said.
âI think he broke up with her,â she admitted.
âJust what I thought,â I muttered before looking at her. âDonât you see whatâs happening?â
âNo,â Candy said.
âSheâs angry Allen dumped her, and sheâs trying to get back at him. She probably heard we were going together and didnât like it, so she told you that stupid mess trying to break us up so she could get back with him.â
Candy shook her head. âSheâs not that type of person, Courtland,â she said.
I sighed, trying to hide my frustration. I couldnât believe Candy was trying to ruin the biggest night of my life. âOkay, letâs say Allen did beat her. Why did she stay with him? Why didnât she break up with him?â
Candy shrugged. âI really canât answer that,â she said. âAll I know is what she told me, and I would never forgive myself if I didnât say anything and something happened to you.â
I laughed. âGirl, please, the only thing thatâs going to happen to me is that Iâm going to go have some fun with my man.â
She gave me a sad smile. âI hope for your sake thatâs all that happens.â
âIs that why you acted so funky with him that night at the fountain?â
âYes,â she admitted.
Candyâs vibe was starting to mess up my evening. âWell, since Iâm dressed, you can leave. Iâm sure you want to get dressed for the dance,â I said, hoping I didnât sound as rude as my words felt. She was going with a group of cheerleaders, and they werenât going to leave until later.
âYeah,â she said, catching my hint. She gathered her things and gave me a hug I
