moving, chasing close behind him, but many. Scattered all around him, in front of him left and right. His legs burned as he tried to run faster and faster, darting around them as they descended upon him.
As he drew closer to the path into the dark forest, he felt though he couldn’t breathe. He fell at the entrance to the forest, coughing and spluttering, wheezing for air.
He didn’t see any movement on the grass that leads into the forest. He turned his back to it and tried to stand to face the field. The movement in the grass seemed to go as far as his eye could see but it didn’t move in towards him anymore. Instead, all the grass a metre from where he stood leaning on the sword swayed with gentle movement. The grass closer stood still.
Lepus took a long deep breath. His heart still pounding. A long growl came from in front of him and then a loud smacking of lips. A patch of grass broke away and moved closer.
“Get back!” Lepus screamed into the empty night. In the distance, he pointed the sword. A dog howled in the distance, but the grass keptswaying for an instant but then eased closer. Lepus let out a roar and plunged the sword towards the grass, but it connected seemingly with thin air before getting near the grass. It was lodged and no matter how hard he pushed or pulled the sword stayed floating. A whimper seemed to emanate from the sword and rich, thick, almost purple blood started pouring out from all around it.
The sword began to tug and, while Lepus tried to pull it towards him, it moved toward the ground slipping from his hands. Tears started to run from his eyes asthe grass would surround him soon. But as he began to tug at the sword the grass seemed to withdraw, until it was all still as far as he could see.
He finally pulled out the sword, and he could move it around again. He watched with horror as blood continued to drip from the air in front of him. It formed a sticky puddle with which smelt of acorns and disinfectant. Lepus took a step towards it and realised it was an invisible creature. The air seemed to shiver around it, although Lepus still was not able to see it.
The creature moaned as it continued to shiver and its outline started to shrink until there was no movement at all. Lepus swung the blade around near the blood but it connected with nothing, the carcass was gone. Lepus sat on the grass, tears still streaming from his eyes.

Chapter 5
The Doctor's Wife
A television bass rumbled from the common room. Lepus groaned and scrambled around under his covers, trying to find where the rest of his sleep had hidden. His hands searched under his pillow but found only each other. He scrunched his eyes tight and buried his face in his pillow, but the whole ward seemed to be rumbling in time with the cheers. It feels as though the noise almost isn’t even coming from the TV but the floor. The screams and applause of millions, ascending somehow from below. No rest it would seem, for this early night sleeping seeker.
Lepus slipped out of his bed. If the crowd was going to keep him awake, he thought he may as well go and stand where he can see what all the fuss is about. He starts walking down the hall and hears sounds of dancing. A lyric and a chord catch his ear as he entered the shared lounge. The sound of Tom Jones singing ‘Delilah’ blasted through the halls. Lepus walks to the opposite side of the TV room and watches Tom sing and bop.
“Jesus,” He said aloud to the room. Two women and a young man turned their heads from the old TV screen to look at him. Lepus saw the thought echo in their minds as they stared at him.
“He never says a thing…” Lepus stayson the far side of the room, where the music was a bearable volume.
“He looks brilliant for his age, is all he pulls off that goatee well!” Satisfied with his reason for speaking they return their gaze to the screen. Early the next morning Lepus left his room.
He had started a good little routine to try and
