intention of finding out if I would or I wouldnât. And I have no intention of staying at his place next weekend.â
âBut why not? I wouldnât be able to resist, if it were me. The guyâs a hunk of the first order.â
Angelina didnât need to be told that. Jake, the man, had even more sex appeal than Jake, the bad boy. And heâd had oodles.
âIf it was anyone other than Alexâs father, I would.â
âIf it was anyone other than Alexâs father, you wouldnât want to,â Wilomena said. âIâve known girls like you before, Angelina. Youâre a one-man woman. And heâs the man.â
âThatâs romantic nonsense!â
âIs it?â Wilomena probed softly.
âYes,â Angelina said stubbornly whilst secretly thinking that Wilomena could be right. Why else hadnât she accepted dates with other men? It wasnâtas though she hadnât been asked. She couldnât even claim to be protecting Alex any more, now that he was at boarding school most of the time.
Wilomena shrugged. âHave it your way. So, youâre really not going to see Jake next weekend? Not at all?â
âIâ¦I might go to lunch with him.â
The look on Wilomenaâs face was telling.
âJust lunch!â Angelina insisted. âAs you yourself said, I need to find out some more about him.â
âSounds like an excuse to gaze at him some more.â
âI didnât gaze at him today. I was just shocked at how much he looks like Alex.â
âWho do you think youâre kidding?â
Angelina groaned. âI did stare, didnât I?â
âDonât beat yourself up over it. The man was worth a stare. I ogled myself. So did every other woman in the place.â
âWhich is why I canât risk being alone with him again. The manâs a right devil where women are concerned. He always was.â
âMmm. But arenât you curious over what it would be like with him now? I mean, heâs sure to be very good in the sack. If what you say about him is true, heâs had plenty of practice.â
âToo much practice. No, Iâm not curious about his lovemaking abilities,â she lied. âOnly about his character and whether heâs going to be good for Alex.â
âYou know, Angelina, youâre a woman as well as a mother. Do you ever think of your own needs?â
âYes, of course I do.â
âBut Iâve never known you to go out on a date. Not during the time Iâve worked here, anyway.â
âDating is seriously overrated. And so is sex.â
âDonât knock it till you try it.â
Angelina flushed. âWho says I havenât?â
âI have eyes, honey. And ears. If youâd slept with someone around here, Iâd know about it. Look, your fatherâs gone now and Alex is almost grown up. Time for you to live a little.â
âMaybe. But not with Jake.â Iâd probably fall in love with him again and then where would I be?
âYeah, perhaps youâre right. If you slept with him, it could be awkward once he finds out about Alex. He might think you were trying to trap him into marriage.â
âIâd be more concerned over what Alex thought.â
âI dare say you would. Youâre a very good mother, Angelina. You put me to shame sometimes.â
âNonsense. Youâre a great mother.â
âI try to be. Talking of kids, I have to go and ring mine. See what the little devils are up to.â
âAnd I have to ring Alex and see how he did at cricket today.â
âBeing a mother just never stops, does it?â And with a parting grin, Wilomena hurried off.
Angelina sighed and made her way down the rest of the path and through the covered archway that provided protection for arriving guests. A green Jaguar was parked there, with a middle-aged couple inside booking in. Angelina
