whenever heâs upset about something.â
âSo, like, three or four times a day, at least,â Zoe added.
Logan felt his cheeks getting warm. No wonder nobody else had reacted. âSorry,â he mumbled.
âWell, you didnât know,â Zoeâs dad said, helping him to his feet. âBut it was brave of you to try to help. So . . . who are you?â
Zoe and Matthew both started talking at once, and Squorp took the opportunity to wriggle out of Matthewâs arms and bound over to Logan. The warm griffin wings brushing his hands made Logan feel less self-conscious. He picked up Squorp and scratched under his chin the way Matthew had.
âMork,â Squorp gurgled, nestling into Loganâs chest. His beak poked around Loganâs collar, and Logan felt a tug. He looked down in time to see one of his shirt buttons disappearing into the griffin cubâs mouth.
âHey, quit that,â Logan said. âI need all the clothes I have left.â
âItâs really not my fault, Dad, I swear,â Zoe was saying. âI promise I didnât tell him anything at school, and I definitely didnât let him into the house. I donât know how he got in. Iâve barely ever spoken to him.â
âThese things happen,â Mr. Kahn said. âHeâs not the first townie to accidentally get in here. Weâll deal with it the usual way. But then, I must say Iâve never heard of anyone talking to griffins at this age before.â He scratched his beard, looking at Logan as though he were able to whistle underÂwater. âWhat did you say your name was?â
âLogan Wilde.â
âI see. And what do your parents do?â
âNothing important.â Logan didnât want to admit that his dad was with the wildlife department in case that scared the Kahns. âItâs just me and my dad now.â
Zoeâs dad shook his head, watching Squorp. âMost unusual, your connection with the griffin. Whatâs he saying now?â
Logan glanced down at Squorp. âHeâs kind of mumbling about delicious buttons. Donât even think about it, cub.â
âHey, little fellow,â Mr. Kahn said. He bent down to meet Squorpâs eyes. âWhat were you doing outside the walls?â
Much delicious food outside walls! But not much treasure. Thought thereâd be more. Clink PROMISED us treasure.
At Loganâs smile, Mr. Kahn looked up. âWhat did he say?â
âHe said he liked the food, but there wasnât as much treasure as heâd thought there would be. He also says someone named Clink promised him treasure.â
âInteresting. Whoâs Clink, buddy?â
Big furry bossy furry BOSSY. Escape her idea! And THEN outside, Clink all Okay BYE and leaves us! Probably found all the treasure and keeping it for herself. Bossy bossy.
Logan relayed this to the Kahns, more or less. Zoe snapped her fingers. âThe big black griffin cub,â she said. âI bet thatâs who he means. She always pushes the others around and decides who eats when and what theyâre going to play.â
Bossy BOSSY, Squorp grumbled.
âSo theyâre out looking for treasure,â Mr. Kahn said. âThat is useful to know.â He frowned. âMaybe youâre right, Zoeâmaybe theyâre all in town, not out in the wild where weâve been looking.â
âI think so, Dad,â she said. âI mean, we saw at least four different kinds of feathers between school and the library and the post office.â
Her dad sighed. âThat makes things a lot harder. Well, letâs get you back to your parents, at least,â he said to Squorp.
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, Squorp wailed, burying his head in Loganâs neck. His beak jabbed uncomfortably into Loganâs collarbone, but Logan didnât mind.
âItâll be all right,â he said, stroking
