it.â
âHow weird is that? You know? We get a shout-out from the headmaster, which I could have done without, and then he brings up some family heirloom weâve never heard of.â
âI think Baskerville is filled with stuff wehavenât heard of,â James said.
âMeaning?â I asked.
âItâs hyperbole,â Sherlock said. âHeâs exaggerating to make a point, in part because of the note in his back pocket.â
James turned to Sherlock Holmes as if ready to decapitate him.
âJamie?â
âItâs nothing. And I said cool it with the nickname!â
âWe can assume it has to do with the missing Bible,â Sherlock said. âAnd because of the way Jamie responded to itâbewilderment with a dash of curiosityâwe can further extrapolate that whatever is written there is not entirely clear. A puzzle, perhaps? A clue?â
âMoriaâs the only one calls me Jamie, Lock . Youâd better remember that!â He stabbed his sister with his eyes. âAnd not here at school ever again. Got it?â
âEasy, Dexter. I get it.â
âAnother middle name?â Sherlock asked.
âTV show,â I said. âCultural reference. Serial killer.â
âAh,â Sherlock said. âI love a good mystery. Doesnât everyone?â
âWhatâs the card say?â I asked.
âItâs for me, not you. Forget about it.â
âIf it has to do with our family Bible, then itâs for me, too.â
âIt doesnât.â
âIf I read it, then Iâll know youâre right,â I said.
âIf he knew what it meant,â Sherlock interjected, âheâd be more willing to share it. Your brother is embarrassed because he has no idea.â
âAs if youâd know!â James barked.
âWhy do you suppose Iâm perusing a map of the campus, Jamie ? For my entertainment? Do you actually believe I donât know every building on the campus? There are fourteen total. Whatâs interesting is that if that note contains a clue to the whereabouts of the Bible, as I believe it must, and if it suggests a campus location or a specific structure, or perhaps an element of one or more structures, then isnât such a map the first place one should, would, turn to?â
âAs if Iâve had time! And where do you get off acting like you know about my note? You donât know anything.â
âLet me see it, Jamie,â I said, offering my outstretched hand. âSeriously.â I shook my open palm.
He was stuck on Sherlockâs meddling comments. âHow could you possibly . . . What is it with you?â
âAm I close? Warm? Warmer?â Sherlock was pointing to various buildings on the school map. âLetâs see. What do they have in common? Windows. Floors. Doors. If I were directing you in a kind of scavenger hunt, it would need to be more specific. Chimney? Clock tower? Ivy covered? Something else structural? Contents? There are books in the library and Main House. A lab here and there: language lab, science lab. Also hymnals in the chapel. Music? Marble in the chapel. An organ. A piano in the common room and in the music rooms. This is fun, donât you think! Give us a clue, wonât you, Jamie Keynes ?â
âShut . . . up!â he hollered.
âIs he right? Has Lock guessed your note? Seriously?â
âHeâs a freak! I donât get him. I donât get you!â he said, shouting in Sherlockâs ear. I pulled him back.
âJames! Come on! Back off! What is it?â
James looked as frightened as Sherlock looked amused. âHeâs just . . . Itâs just . . . plain weird, is all.â
âBecause Iâm painfully close?â Sherlock askedJames. Then to me he declared, âBecause Iâm painfully close.â
James stomped out of the room, slamming the door behind.
I looked over at Sherlock
