Sector Two.
âWell?â he repeated.
Jonah looked around the room, confused. The commander was watching intently.
âHow did I do what?â Jonah asked.
Lieutenant Potts sat back, shaking his head in exasperation. Samantha the Bravest and Most Daring Adventurer folded her arms, staring at him suspiciously.
âHow did you steal the List?â she said. âHow did you know where it was?â
She looked a lot like Alex, now that Jonah took abetter look at her. She had the same wispy blond hair that fell well past her shoulders, and equally big, round ears. He thought maybe sheâd take pity on him, since he knew Alex, but apparently not.
Jonah wasnât exactly sure what to say. He was being accused of stealing something heâd never seen on a ship heâd been on for a day from a bunch of people who terrified him. Erna the Strong was waiting by the door, ready to take him back to the brig.
âI didnât steal anything,â Jonah said. âIâve only left Squirrel Street once so far. And then Alex and I ran into a screaming monster, so I wasnât in a rush to leave again.â
The commander tapped a finger on the table. She seemed to like doing that.
âIs it possible he could have found the List without knowing where it was?â
Samantha seemed to think about that. âI guess. I found it by accident.â She paused. âBut it would have taken him a while.â
âIs there any chance he could have slipped away for that long?â the commander asked Lieutenant Gordon, who had hurried along behind Jonah and joined the meeting.
Lieutenant Gordon shook his head. âI donât think so. When we lost Kyla the Courageous and Daniel the Ninja, he was sent back to his room. But the guards were still at their stations. He couldnât have left.â
Lieutenant Potts snorted. âHow convenient.â
Jonah put up his hand.
The commander looked at him in surprise. âYes?â
âCan I speak without being sent to the brig?â Jonah asked.
âThat depends,â she replied.
Jonah lowered his hand uncertainly. âCan I just say that I hoped Samantha would find the List and prove that Iâm not an Incredible Space Raider? I donât want to be here either. I want to go home.â
Everyone looked at the commander. Lieutenant Gordon rubbed his forehead.
The commander stared at Jonah for what seemed like a very long time. Her lightning-streaked hair was tied into a ponytail this time, revealing her sharp cheekbones.
âYou canât go home, Jonah the Now Incredible,â she said finally. âNot until our mission is done.â She looked around the room. âWe canât blame him for wanting to go home. But in the absence of proof, we have to assume he was recruited for the ISR.â
Lieutenant Potts looked like he was going to object, but he thought better of it.
The commander turned back to Jonah. âI donât think you stole the List, Jonah. You donât seem . . . quite capable of that. No offense.â
âNone taken,â Jonah said.
She nodded. âHowever, if you are the right recruit, then you are also a special recruit. We donât know why that is, but perhaps weâll find out soon. For now, weâre in a serious situation. You can return to training and be granted some information about our mission. You are still, however, on brig duty.â
âWe canât give information to a possible spy,â Lieutenant Potts said.
The commander straightened and looked at him. Jonah heard Erna the Strong shift behind him. Lieutenant Potts shrank in his chair.
âI believe I just said Jonah was a member of the ISR,â the commander said quietly. âDidnât I say that?â
Everyone in the room nodded.
âI thought so,â she continued. âDoes that mean youâre questioning my judgment, Lieutenant Potts?â
âNo,â he said quickly,
