from this point on.â
Angela blushed again when she met her friendâs eye and excused herself, âbathroom,â she said.
âSit young man,â the receptionist said firmly and indicated to a bank of seats. âIâll watch out for you until the attendant comes.â
âMy name is Oengus.â
âAngus, I am Noleen. Tell me is there anyone to meet you at JFK?â
âWhere?â
âKennedy Airport in New York.â
âYes, I believe a witch and her cat.â
Noleen laughed. She liked a boy with a sense of humor.
As an escorted minor with impeccable documents, the flight attendant escorted Oengus through the formalities and onto the plane without any delays.
In New York she then took him through to the escorted minor pick-up station. She was surprised to see a red-haired girl with a cat wearing a simple red dress and smiling at them. The girl was a stunning beauty and people were stopping just to look.
âThis must be my pick up, sheâll have the documentation,â Oengus said.
The flight attendant watched them go. She shook her head. Something about that boy had grabbed her. Was it his eyes? And his oddness in insisting he bought gloves in the Duty free? Still New York could be cold at this time of the year. Lucky he had that green cloak or heâd catch cold. She shrugged it off. She needed to finish the paperwork and get on with her day.
âInteresting name,â the girl said. âIs it really Oengus?â
âYes and what is yours?â
âMaedbh,â she said.
âIs it true that you are an apprentice witch?â Oengus asked.
âDo you mind if I put on my shoes? The floor in here is very cold.â
âWhat?â
âOengus my instructions were to bring Venus my cat and to wear a red dress. I followed the instructions but now Iâd like to put my shoes back on.â
âSure,â Oengus said agreeably.
âOver here, I deposited them under a bank of seats.â
The shoes were still there and Maedbh sat and put Venus on a side seat and then and put her shoes on.
âOnly a red dress?â Oengus asked, the thought striking him.
Maedbh shrugged. âIf there is one thing Iâve learned about magic it is that it is complicated. So if I get instructions I follow them fatefully to the letter.â
âIâm sure meeting me did not mean magic. Youâll catch a cold.â
âYou could lend me your green cloak?â Maedbh suggested.
âItâs my friend Puca Beag. Heâll shape shift to himself later. He actually hates being a cloak but it was the only way to get him through.â
âI hated being in that overhead locker,â Beag whispered out of the corner of the cloak.
âSsssh!â Maedbh said urgently. âIf you are a cloak, be a cloak even while we are in the taxi and out of here!â
Oengus felt Beag shrug in annoyance but was pleased that Beag kept his silence.
âTaxi?â a large man who looked official asked,
âNo thanks,â Maedbh said firmly and the man wandered on.
âYou said a taxi?â Oengus said.
âThe guys who come into the airport are scammers in my opinion. Heâd probably leave off the meter and screw us.â
âReally?â
âOengus this is New York. Get real.â
âSure.â
âI live in Greenwich Village,â Maedbh added.
âO.K. And I have a thousand dollars in my wallet.â
âKeep it there and out of sight, we donât want to be mugged.â
âSure.â
âJust let me handle things Oengus. I want to get you home and then I can relax and change into something more comfortable.â
âYou look lovely,â Oengus couldnât help saying.
âWitches donât do boyfriends or relationships,â Maedbh snapped. âAnd I am warned to be careful of you.â
âMe?â
âOengus you will stay with me until we can get you on your
