lastâbroadish move of Mistyâs to hate on me. I know sheâs the guilty party in this whole mess. No need to prove it. She always reveals herself in time. Just like she did today.
âHey yâall, what happened here? Did somebody get their butt beat down or what?â
âNo, Misty, but I donât doubt thatâs what you wanted to see. How come you werenât on the bus this morning?â I ask.
âOh, well, I got a ride this morning,â she says all nervous like she is lying to Judge Judy.
âFrom who?â I ask, âcause I know her mama didnât bring her. Mistyâs mama, Maria, needs at least two drinks to get up in the morning, and the morning didnât start this early for her. She got demoted last year from full-time to part-time secretary because she could never make it before second period.
âOh, um, Jason brought me to school.â
âDoesnât Trecee roll with him in the morning?â Nellie asks. We call her Ms. Cleo âcause she knows the what, when, where, why, who, and how of all the dramaâand there is always plenty of it.
âIf you rode with Jason and Trecee, why are you just getting here?â Mickey raises a good question.
âI had some other business to take care of. Jason canât give a sistah a ride sometimes? Damn, why yâall sweatinâ me? I just came to say âwhatâs up,â a first day friendly gesture, but never mind now.â
That broad was busted. I felt like beating Mistyâs lying behind right then and there, but I kept my cool. So thatâs how Jason knew to come stop the fight.
âGirls. Yâall always got some stuff going down,â Jason says, walking back in from the courtyard where he left Trecee to calm down. âKeep me out of this. I ainât giving nobody no more rides.â Jason walked away, looking pissed and slightly amused. Dudes love it when girls fight, just not when they get dragged into the middle of them.
Knowing Misty, this is only the beginning of the mess sheâs stirring up. She probably took the opportunity to tell every little made-up detail about me and KJ she could fester while she was in the car with Trecee. That broad can be creative when she wants to be. She needs to use that creativity of hers in English class and save all that drama she brings for Shakespeare.
You see, Misty ainât too smart when it comes to school. Or at least she doesnât apply herself. She is way too worried about being popular and in other folksâ business than doing the right thing in class. She needs someone elseâs drama to feed from or her day is not complete.
âSo, Misty, you mean to tell me the entire time you were riding with Jason and Trecee, you and she didnât talk at all?â I ask, trying to see if she would come clean.
âLook, Johnnie Cochran, I donât have to lie to you. I ainât on trial. Dang, Jayd, you always acting so suspicious of me. What have I ever done to you to make you like that?â she asks, trying to gain some sympathy from somewhere but not here.
âNo you didnât just say that to me, in front of God and everybody else, Misty. What have you done to me? Oh, well let me tell you what youâve done, starting with talking behind my back and backstabbing me every chance you get.â
Of course the bell for first period rings right when I am on a roll. On the first day the bell rings about ten minutes later than usual. Everyone goes their separate ways, for now. Why does Misty have to start the year off so early with drama? I bet she couldnât wait to get to school this morning, I just know it.
This mess has probably been brewing all summer, and no doubt Misty has been letting Trecee simmer in her lies the entire time. She and Trecee became friends last year. Every time Misty meets somebody new, she tries to get in with them real tight, and then spin her web of deceit. I should know.
