wonât.â
âI have to know if there are any Elves left,â she insisted, trying to keep her voice level. Now she risked a quick glance at Garth. The big Roverâs face registered nothing of what he was thinking. âI have to discover if they can be brought back into the world of Men. It was Allanonâs charge to me, and I guess I believe it important enough to carry it out.â
âAllanon, again!â Tiger Ty snapped irritably. âYouâd risk your life on the word of a shade? Do you have any idea what Morrowindl is like? No, of course you donât! Why do I even ask? You didnât hear a word I said, did you? You think you can just walk in and look around and walk out again? Well, you canât! You wouldnât get twenty feet, Miss Wrenâyou or your big friend! That whole island is a death trap! Swamp and jungle, vog choking off everything, Killeshan spitting fire. And the things that live there, the monsters? What sort of chance do you think youâll have against them? If a Wing Rider and his Roc couldnât land and come out again, you sure as demonâs blood canât either!â
âMaybe,â Wren agreed. âBut I have to try.â She glanced again at Garth, who signed briefly, not a rebuke, but a caution.
Are you certain about this?
She nodded resolutely, saying to Tiger Ty. âDonât you want to know whatâs happened to them? What if they need help?â
âWhat if they do?â he growled. âWhat are the Sky Elves supposed to do? Thereâs only a handful of us. There were thousands of them. If they couldnât deal with whatâs there, what chance would we have? Or you, Miss Rescue?â
âWill you take us?â she repeated.
âNo, I will not! Forget the whole business!â He rose in a huff.
âVery well. Then weâll build a boat and reach Morrowindl that way.â
âBuild a boat! What do you know about building boats! Or sailing them for that matter!â Tiger Ty was incensed. âOf all the foolish, pigheaded . . . !â
He stormed off toward Spirit, then stopped, kicked at the earth, wheeled, and came back again. His seamed face was crimson, his hands knotted into fists.
âYou mean to do this thing, donât you?â he demanded. âWhether I help you or not?â
âI have to,â she answered calmly.
âBut youâre just . . . Youâre only . . .â He sputtered, seemingly unable to complete the thought.
She knew what he was trying to say and she didnât like it. âIâm stronger than you think,â she told him, a hard edge to her voice now. âIâm not afraid.â
Tiger Ty stared long and hard at her, glanced briefly at Garth, and threw up his hands. âAll right, then!â He leveled a scorching glare at her. âIâll take you! Just to the shoreline, mind, because unlike you Iâm good and scared and I donât fancy risking my neck or Spiritâs just to satisfy your curiosity!â
She met his gaze coolly. âThis doesnât have anything to do with satisfying my curiosity, Tiger Ty. You know that.â
He dropped down in front of her, his sun-browned face only inches from her own. âMaybe. But you listen. I want your promise that after you see what youâre up against, youâll rethink this whole business. Because despite the fact that youâre a bit short of common sense, I kind of like you and Iâd hate to see anything bad happen to you. This isnât going to turn out the way you think. Youâll see that soon enough. So you promise me. Agreed?â
Wren nodded solemnly. âAgreed.â
Tiger Ty stood up, hands on hips, defiant to the end. âCome on, then,â he muttered. âLetâs get this over with.â
