still smiling when he released her.
âAnd what makes you think, Mr. Queen,â said Margo, âthat I wanted you to do that?â
âIâm psychic,â said Beau. He watched the curtain. It fluttered violently and then was still.
âYou clever man,â murmured Kerrieâs cousin. âAnd the dear little thing is so jealous. Do come againâsoon.â
In the office of Ellery Queen, Inc., Confidential Investigations, Mr. Ellery Queen surveyed his partner sympathetically. Back from the Adirondacks, Mr. Queen, while leaner than usual, was browned and fit; but his partner was haggard, and two creases, like quotation marks, separated his gloomy eyes.
âI always knew you were mercenary,â said Mr. Queen, âbut I didnât think you were a quitter.â
âIt isnât the dough, I tell you! All right, it wasnât much of a job, and Goossens and De Carlos insist Coleâs retainer of fifteen grand, plus expenses, was ample to cover itââ
âPrincely,â agreed Mr. Queen.
âBut the jobâs over! Our agreement was that weâd find the two women. Thatâs what we were hired to do, weâve done it, and weâre through. What more do you want?â
âI want,â replied Mr. Queen calmly, âto know why Cadmus Cole was so mysterious about the nature of our assignment. I want to know why he didnât tell us the simple truth. I want to know what was at the back of his head.â
âGo see a medium!â
âDid he expect to be murdered? Was he murdered? And if so, who murdered him? And why? Cole may have hired us primarily to answer these questions, and for some obscure reason chose not to say so. But if thatâs the case, weâre not throughââ
âAnd fifteen grand doesnât begin to pay for the job,â growled Beau, âand try to get more out of Goossens and De Carlos. You feeling like John D. these days?â
Mr. Queen said abruptly: âBeau, this isnât like you.â
âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
âThereâs a reason for your unwillingness to go on with this investigation, and I donât think itâs money. What is it?â
Beau glared at him. âAll right, Master-Mind. Thereâs a reason, and itâs not money, itâs a dame. So what?â
âAh,â said Mr. Queen. âMiss Shawn?â
âIâm not saying!â shouted Beau. âAnyway, I think sheâsort of took a shine to me, and I canât hang around and ball up her life, thatâs all! Sheâthis girl canât afford to fall in love!â
âOh, I see,â said Mr. Queen. âDeplorable situation. Well, then, make it plain youâre not in love with herâor are you?â
âNone of your business,â snapped Beau.
âHmm. Well, sir, since youâre in love with her, sooner or later youâre going to crawl back, you know. So you may as well do it now. I canât take over, because youâre supposed to be Queen, and exposing our little fraud would mean, for one thing, having to give back that fifteen thousand, for another possibly alarming some one whoâd be better off unalarmed.â
âBut what excuse would I have to keep going back there?â Beau looked sullen. âGoossens and De Carlos gave me the bumâs rush yesterday, Kerrieâs sore at me ⦠Of course, thereâs Margoââ
âOf course there is,â said Mr. Queen. âA female who apparently enjoys your society. Thereâs no law against a young man calling on a female for social reasons. Just keep your eyes open. Hang around. Watch. I have a compelling feeling,â said Mr. Queen reflectively, âthat thereâs going to be trouble.â
âTrouble? Thereâs plenty now! Say â¦â Beau looked alarmed. âWhat dâye meanâtrouble?â
Mr. Queen smiled. âBeau,
