Would anyone think of looking for our organization in a place like that? And itâs got all the potential we need. The extra million is for contingencies. What the Libyans want is training facilities for some of their specialist groups. The IRA have expressed interest through them. There are others â you know them.â He shrugged, dismissing speculation. âWeâd provide that service, but our main activity is carrying out high-risk operations that nobody wants to touch themselves. Thatâs where the money lies. Nice place, isnât it? I quite fancy living there. Weâd be very comfortable, donât you think?â
Rilke muttered, âItâs brilliant cover. Mad, but brilliant. Did you think of this?â
Oakham nodded. âYes. I know the place. I was born in that part of the world. And the beauty of it is, itâs a legitimate business. Weâll all have positions on the administrative staff â Iâll settle the details later â weâll be salaried employees of the consortium that has bought the hotel. All taxes paid up, proper accounts, whiter than white. No fiddling with anything that could catch the Revenueâs eye.â
The video ran on, lingering over the grounds, the different aspects of the house. Jan had suppressed the sound-track.
Daniel asked, âWe donât know anything about hotels. What about staff?â
âThey stay on,â Harry answered. âThatâs part of the deal. Donât worry about details, itâll be worked out.â
âDocumentation for us? Whoâs going to provide that?â Zarubin demanded.
âYou are,â Harry said. âUse your own facilities; you know best how to cover your tracks.â
Rilke nodded in agreement.
âThe facilities need extending, if weâre going to run courses,â the Russian remarked. Training, physical as well as mental, was his speciality. âYou could build an assault course â thereâs enough land?â
âThere are over two hundred acres,â Harry assured him. âSome hotels run war games at weekends. Itâs quite a popular pastime. Weâd do the same. One for the customers and one for real. But I emphasize again, thatâs secondary, not primary. I said yes because my contact seemed so keen on the idea. But itâs got to be very selective and very limited. If we pull off one or two big operations, we can phase that out completely.â
âIâd be happier,â Daniel put in. âI like the country hotel, itâs very good for me, Iâd be safer there than in my lousy room in London. But having people come and go who know about us â I donât like it.â
Harry Oakham smiled at him. It was not friendly. He was rocking the boat; it wasnât the moment to cast doubts.
âYouâve been on the run too long,â he said. âItâs made you nervous.â
Danielâs face reddened. âCautious,â he snapped back. âNobodyâs been after your hide.â
âThey will be,â was the answer. âBut they wonât know where to find it. Or yours. Opt out if you donât like the deal, but make up your mind now!â
The Israeli didnât hesitate. He had no option and that grinning bastard knew it. He hated the English, he thought. Smug, superior, still carrying colonialism in their hearts â¦
âIâm in. I said so,â he stated.
âGood.â Oakham relaxed, beaming friendliness at him. Daniel was not deceived. He looked round at them. The video had run its length. Jan switched off the machine.
âAny more questions?â he invited.
âHow long before we become operational?â Rilke asked.
He was excited and committed. There was a gleam in the cold eyes. His mother could have a luxury flat, all the comforts again.
âThree months. Iâll have everything ready in three months. Jan and I are flying back after this
