implications of her actions in Anthony’s study had sunk in the moment she had roused herself from her orgasmic mist. The brute had been smiling with such satisfaction that she wanted to slap him. Instead, she had gathered her dress and stormed back to the bedroom, slamming the door behind her.
As she dressed herself for the second time that morning, she sighed. Why does he have such a hold over me? For some reason, she found herself capitulating to his commands and treatments over and over again. No doubt, she had managed to find her release but as soon as the pleasure faded away, it left her feeling dirty and debased.
Gianna put her face in her hands. Just as she planned to spend a moment to wallow, the doorknob turned and the brute entered.
She looked at him with such furious intensity that she couldn’t believe that he hadn’t gone up in flames. Instead, he smiled broadly at her.
“I have a gift for you.”
“If it has anything to do with what’s between your legs, read my lips. I’m not interested!” she snapped in a snarky way.
Lifting his eyebrows, Anthony revealed what he had behind his back. He tossed the objects over to Gianna and she instinctively caught them. A pair of leather boots in soft, calfskin leather.
“I had these made for you, based on your own footwear. I’d like to take you on a tour of my land today and those satin slippers of yours would not last a moment on the prairie.”
Gianna reluctantly pulled them on, discovering to her amazement that they were a perfect fit. She stood up and walked a couple of steps in them. They molded themselves perfectly to her feet and gave her a nice amount of traction.
“These are great, thank you,” she murmured reluctantly. Anthony grinned and held out his hand.
“Will you join me, my little wildcat?”
Anthony took her reluctantly proffered hand and in a brusque action, yanked her towards him. Squeaking in surprise, she collided with his hard chest. Her green eyes flashing with anger, she shot him a poisonous stare as the brute chuckled and draped a heavy arm around her shoulder.
“Come now, there is much to be seen today.”
Gianna’s body tensed as she prepared to shrug him off but paused when she saw a sudden dark glint in her eyes. He wants me to fight him , she realized. Suddenly it dawned on her. Ever since she had arrived, the older man had been deliberately baiting her hot temper. True enough, she had struck out on every occasion, which inevitably led to her debasement. That wily fox, he’s trying to trigger me into giving him a reason to punish me! The new knowledge gave her a feeling of empowerment that strangely tickled her. Without her realizing it, the corner of her lip curled up. Anthony raised an eyebrow.
    “Well, what amuses you?”
Gianna bit her tongue and cursed herself. She couldn’t be an open book, not in front of this nosey old man. Still, this was a pivotal moment. She finally had a better understanding of the way he operated and she was determined not to let that go to waste. Win the battle, lose the war , she told herself. In an overly coy fashion, she looked up at his stormy blue eyes from beneath her long lashes. This earned her a quizzical look. She smiled saccharinely at him.
“It’s just such lovely weather for a busy day.”
For a moment, his nose crinkled in confusion. Then the brute smoothed out his expression and guffawed loudly.
“Indeed, it is, my wildcat. Indeed, it is.”

A low hum filled the terse summer air as Anthony led his young wife across the prairie. He knew she was up to something but for some inexplicable reason, he felt as carefree as a lark. Giving her a sideways glance, he half smiled as he watched the little battle she had going on. Throughout their walk, she had been trying so hard to maintain a bored expression, but she couldn’t hide the wonderment which fluttered across her face every time she saw something of interest. The first time it happened, she had
