have every reason to believe that Mr. Barton was killed for the million dollars of ransom money. Why whoever received the ransom found it necessary to kill him, we donât know. Iâm hoping that one of you gentlemen can enlighten me.â
âHave you spoken to Angel?â McCarthy asked. âShe saw the kidnappers.â
âYou spoke to her?â
âWe both spoke to her,â Ranier said, âbut she wouldnât talk about itââ
âShe couldnât,â McCarthy interposed.
âThen she couldnât. The doctor said she was in shock. Then when she heard about Mikeâs death, she went to pieces completely.â
âWhere is she now?â
âIn her room.â
âWe have reason to believe,â Masuto said, âthat the person who killed Mr. Barton was known to him, perhaps a good friend.â
âMike had lots of friends.â
âAnd no friends,â McCarthy put in. âYou have friends when you earn less than two hundred thousand a year. Above that, you have appendages. When youâre a star, you have the star-fuckers, and the woods are full of them.â
âWere you his friend?â Masuto asked gently.
âIâm going to ignore the insinuation. I was his lawyer. Bill here was his business agent.â
âYes, of course.â Masuto studied them thoughtfully. âMr. Barton, it appears, was killed some time between twelve-thirty and one oâclock. Without any insinuations, believe me, I must ask you gentlemen where each of you were at that time?â
âRight here,â Ranier replied.
âWell,â McCarthy said, âyou did run back to your office.â
âLater. Much later.â
âCome on, Bill, it was not much later.â
âWhat in hell are you trying to do?â Ranier demanded angrily. âSet me up?â
âIâm not setting you up. For Christâs sake, what are you so jumpy about? No oneâs accusing you of killing Mike. Youâre the last person in the world who had any reason to kill him. But the plain truth of the matter is that Mike got the ransom call at twelve noon on the button, and he bombed out of here with the money two minutes later. You left about ten minutes after that, and it was half-past one when you came back.â
âI drove straight to my office.â
âAnd where is your office?â Masuto asked.
âOn Camden. My secretary keeps a log. She logs me in and she logs me out. She can bear witness to that. I had some work that had to be attended to. I didnât stay to finish it. I brought it back here with me.â
âAnd when did you get back here?â
âIt was about one-forty-five, I think. âLena Jonesâsheâs the maidâshe let me in.â
âAnd while he was gone, for an hour and forty-five minutes, where were you, Mr. McCarthy?â
âYou know you have no damned right to ask me any questions.â
âI know that. You donât have to answer.â
âI was right here, in this room. I made some phone calls, but I was right here.â
âAlone?â
âYes, alone. But Mrs. Holtz brought me a sandwich and coffee.â
âWhen was that?â
McCarthy shrugged.
âYou know damn well when it was,â Ranier said. âYou were eating the sandwich when I got back. You offered me the other one. I didnât even take time for lunch,â he told Masuto.
âSo what? I never left this room. Right now I would like to leave it. Iâve been cooped up here all day.â
âYou are both free to leave whenever you wish,â Masuto said.
âIf youâre going to subject the Angel to questioning, I think Iâll stay,â McCarthy told him. âIâm her attorney.â
âAs you wish. And if you think of anything more you would like to tell me, Iâll be in the kitchen.â
âIâll take you there,â Ranier
