Sisters, but he does know that Book is too soft to be a good leader, citing his decision to leave the Heartland Territory in order to free a bunch of undeserving Less Thans.
Dozer dismisses Red with a satisfied expression and begins his summation. âSo as you can see, this group of sixââ
âDonât we get a chance to speak?â Book asks.
Dozer gives him a look as though a bird just shit on his head. âHuh?â
âWeâre the defendants. Donât we get a chance to defend ourselves?â
âWell . . .â
âOr is the prosecution afraid its case isnât strong enough?â
Dozerâs nostrils flare. âBe my guest,â he says.
âSo I can call witnesses?â
âHow can you have witnesses? You didnât even know you were on trial till a few minutes ago.â
âCan I call them or not?â
Dozerâs teeth clench. âFine.â
Hope gives Book a probing look; she has no idea where heâs going with this.
Book stumbles to his feet and says, âI have only one witness to call.â
Itâs impossible not to notice the smirk on Dozerâs face. âYeah, and who is that?â
âYou. I call Dozer to the stand.â
Although the soundof the train makes it nearly impossible to hear, Hope swears she can hear something resembling a gasp.
âMe?â Dozer asks. âWhy would you call me to help you ?â
âSo you refuse,â Book says.
âI didnât say that. Iâm just surprised, thatâs all.â
âSo youâll do it?â
âI have nothing to be afraid of, if thatâs what youâre thinking.â
Dozer steps forward and Book slowly circles him as though deep in thought. Hope has to suppress a smile.
âYouâve accused the six of us of treason,â Book begins.
âThatâs right.â
âAnd what is it exactly that we did?â
âI told you.â
âTell us again.â
The tendons in Dozerâs neck grow taut. âThe six of you conspired behind our backs. You decided to run away and free the Sisters from Camp Freedom.â He nodsconfidently in the direction of his three supporters.
Everyone turns to Book, waiting for him to go on. Air whistles through the trainâs slatted walls. âLet me ask you a question,â Book says. âHow did we get here?â
âHuh?â
âHow did we get here? We Less Thans?â
âHow do you think? We crossed the mountains, the Flats, the Brown Forest . . .â
âHow did we even get up Skeleton Ridge in the first place?â
âHorses. Or donât you remember?â
Red, Angela, and Lacey laughâa little too loudly. Everyone else remains silent.
âI remember the horses,â Book says, âbut I canât remember how we got them.â
âFrom the stables,â Dozer says. âWhere else?â
âAnd howâd we get to the stables?â
âWhat do you think, you idiot?â Dozer explodes. âWe escaped from camp!â
As soon as the words pass his lips, Hope sees he regrets them.
âAnd this is where I donât understand the charges,â Book says. âIt was okay that we escaped, but itâs not okay we help those Sisters do the same?â
âThatâs not what Iâm saying.â
âThen what are you saying?â
Dozerâs face turns beet red. If he could get away withwrapping his two thick hands around Bookâs neck, he would gladly do it.
âIâm saying that was then, this is now.â
âGo on,â Book says.
âThat was fine that we escaped. It was the right thing, even. But now that weâre on the run, we donât have time for all that.â
âFreeing others?â
âRight.â
âSo those Sisters have to remain prisoners.â
âExactly.â
âAnd those Less Thans at Camp Liberty?â
