which was probably his ultimate goal in suggesting this. But he was right that it was for a good cause. Convincing Jeremy of that, though, was something else entirely.
That night we met Avery and Fletcher at Joeâs Pizzeria. They had the best salad bar and pizza buffet in town. Avery and I focused on the salad while the guys loaded up on a variety of slices. Fletcher picked up the jar of Parmesan, sprinkled the flaky cheese on a slice, and set the jar off to the side.
âSo something interesting happened at the shelter today,â I began, putting the jar of Parmesan back in the center where it belonged.
âAll the dogs got adopted?â Jeremy asked.
âI wish. Wouldnât that be great? But no, weâre preparing for our annual Bark in the Park fund-raiser, and weâre adding a new element this year. A gun show.â I didnât know why I grimaced, maybe because all three looked at me like Iâd lost my mind. âItâs not what you think.â Then I went on to explain how it worked. I ended with, âSo are you guys willing to show your guns?â
Fletcher shrugged. âSure.â
The way his T-shirt hugged him, he was pretty much showing off his build now. I looked at Jeremy. He didnât appear quite as eager. It was probably the lawyer in him, looking for loopholes, wanting to read the small print. He was the only person I knew who actually read licensing agreements. âSo what? We just stand there?â he asked.
âPretty much, I think. And, you know, show off the guns.â
âShirtless?â
âNot necessarily. I think itâs whatever youâre comfortable with.â Although I could certainly see Chase removing his shirt if he got competitive.
âI guess it seems harmless,â he said.
âAnd itâs for a good cause,â I reminded him. Reaching over, I stroked his arm. âI bet youâd bring in a lot of money.â
âOnly if youâre saving your dollars and vote for me.â
âOf course Iâm going to vote for you.â
âOkay, then, as long as Iâm assured of making a couple of bucks so I donât look like an idiot, Iâm in.â
Smiling brightly, I squeezed his hand. âYay! And youâll make more than a couple. I promise.â
âGuess Iâd better start saving my dollars for Fletcherâs jar,â Avery said with a challenge in her eye.
âMight need to make it fives,â I countered, âif you want any chance of Fletcher beating Jeremy.â
âOh, yeah? Maybe Iâll make it twenties.â
âStill wonât be enough.â
âWhoa!â Jeremy exclaimed. âYou girls might need to take this down a notch.â
âItâs just a little friendly competition,â Avery assured him.
âThatâs right,â I confirmed. âBut itâs game on.â
Fletcher laughed. âDo you know how competitive Avery is?â
âOf course, I know,â I assured him. âWeâve been best friends forever.â
âMay the hunkiest boyfriend win,â she said. She tapped knuckles with Fletcher. While Iâd never been able to beat her at grades, this was different. This was a chance for Jeremy, who no one seemed to notice, to shine and stand out.
âBy the way,â Avery said, âI know itâs kinda short notice but Thursday is when Iâll start house-sitting. Dotwill be back Sunday. Are you guys still in?â
âI am,â I said, and looked at Jeremy.
âShould be able to get a day off from work,â he said.
âWould you mind driving?â she asked. âDonât think we really need two cars.â
âSure, no problem.â
âWeâre going to have so much fun.â
When Jeremy and I got to my house, we slipped into the backyard and stretched out on a lounge chair on the patio. I was pretty sure Mom knew we were homeâshe had to have heard the car
