that Dani wasnât worried.
She rounded the corner and was halfway through her âHi, Iâm Dani Buchanan. How may I help you?â when she recognized the lone diner. The power suit was familiar as were the dark eyes and stubborn jaw.
âThis is a surprise,â she told Alex Canfield.
âI heard the food was good.â
She glanced at the menu in his hand. âI take it you havenât ordered. Would you like a few suggestions?â
âAre you going to spit on my food before they bring it to me?â
She grinned. âIt depends on why youâre really here.â
âMaybe I just want to get to know you.â
âOh, please. I may not have gone to law school and lost my humanity, but Iâm not an idiot.â
âYou went to Cornell, which is tough to get into, and I never said you were an idiot.â
As she stared down at him, it occurred to her she wasnât disappointed heâd shown up at the restaurant. Interesting. She also noticed she sort of enjoyed bantering with him. They were both verbal and quick.
But he hadnât answered the questionâwhy was he here?
âBeing an idiot was implied,â she said.
He motioned to the chair across from his. âYou could join me.â
âOr I could not.â
He glanced around at the dining room. âItâs after nine. Your dinner crowd has left. Have dinner with me. Weâll get to know each other. Iâll even let you pick the topics we discuss.â
Somehow she doubted that. Heâd been less than friendly the last time theyâd been together. She was ambivalentâunderstanding his need to protect his family and hating that she was considered the enemy. Still, she pulled out a chair and sat down. âI want to order the food,â she told him.
âWhy am I not surprised?â
âAnd the wine.â
âWill you cut my food into tiny pieces and feed me, as well?â
âOnly if you have bad table manners.â
Eddie walked over and looked at her.
âMr. Canfield and I will be having dinner together, Eddie.â Dani placed the order, picking her favorites, then chose a bottle of Leonetti Cellar Sangiovese.
âNice,â Alex said when Eddie left. âThe wineâs a little pricey.â
âItâs worth it. Besides, youâre rich. You can afford it.â
He raised his eyebrows. âYouâre assuming Iâm buying.â
âYou did the inviting.â
âThis is your place.â
âFine. You can take advantage of my employee discount.â
He nodded. âI appreciate that.â He passed her the bread basket. âHow are you enjoying your job here?â
The implication being it was a new job. She wasnât surprised he knew thatâno doubt dragon-boy had investigated every aspect of her life.
âI like it a lot. Bernie and his mother are great. I know Mama Giuseppe makes everyone crazy, but I think sheâs very entertaining. The kitchen staff are terrified of her. I like the food, the staff and the regulars. I hope to be here a long time.â
âWhy the restaurant business?â he asked.
âI never thought about doing anything else. I grew up as a Buchanan. I want to say itâs in my blood, but I guess that isnât true. Itâs what I know. Why did you go to law school?â
âMy soul was getting in the way of being a ruthless bastard. I knew theyâd suck it out of me.â
She glared at him. âI answered your question seriously.â
âFair enough. I wanted to do the right thing. Be on the right side of the law. For that, I needed to understand it.â
That surprised her. âYou consider yourself an idealist?â
âWhy not?â
âYouâre in corporate law and youâre working on a presidential campaign. Is there idealism left in either place?â
âDemocracy is alive and well.â
âSo is the need to raise millions of
