Iâm sure you donât like to mix business with pleasure, but . . .â
âNah, definitely not.â
She blinked bashfully. âOkay, let me explain.â
As she waved her hand to help with her explanation, I noticed a ring. Good! Iâll just tell her I donât date married women. She chuckled. âAnother young attorney, Taylor Jabowski, she works in our legal department.â She continued to wave her hand wildly. âSheâs tall and gorgeous. Sheâs about your age.â
Taylor walked up. She was tall, white, and bleach blond. She was a size zero and my stomach turned. As I shook my head to erase the vision of Taylor that just tiptoed into my mind, I chuckled. âNah, Iâm really not interested. In fact, Iâm in a serious relationship.â
She shrugged her shoulders. âOh, Iâm sorry. I love to play matchmaker.â She bobbed her head from side to side like she felt silly for asking. âPlease excuse me.â
Relieved that she wasnât the one interested, I blushed. âNah, youâre cool. Donât worry about it.â

TAYLOR
M y administrative assistant ran into my office. I peeped behind her to see if she was being chased. My forehead wrinkled. She blushed and fanned herself. âTaylor, girl.â
âWhat?â
âThe man of your dreams is downstairs in the conference room.â
âKatherine, just because thereâs a single man in the building does not mean heâs the man of my dreams.â I chuckled. âWhere have you been all day?â
She clenched her teeth together. âDownstairs, girl. You need to get your butt down there.â
âWhat have you been doing down there?â
âI had to fill in for the damn legislative admin.â
âYouâre a trip.â
âGirl, this man is fine. Trust me.â
âIâve trusted you before.â
She lifted her glasses and looked at me. âDonât even try it. I told you that young boy was cute. And I saw you . . .â
She laughed. I shooed her. âWhatever.â
âTaylor, I know you better than you think I know you.â
âAnyway. Are you done downstairs?â I huffed.
âNo, weâre meeting until three. Come down there around one-thirty so you can meet Mr. Patterson.â
âKatherine, Iâm not thinking about Mr. Patterson.â
She turned to leave my office. When she reached the door, she leaned back in. âHeâs finer than the last guy I told you about.â
âGood bye, Katherine.â
At quarter of three, I got the urge to go downstairs and just check out what Katherine was raving about. I went into the conference room corridor. I peeped in all the closed doors. Finally, I saw her. Through the slim windowpane, I surveyed the room. There werenât even any black men in the room. Who the hell was she talking about? I saw two white guys that I didnât recognize. Now, she must think Iâm desperate. Just as I was about to walk away, it looked like they were adjourning. I stood in the hall waiting for Katherine.
I jokingly said, âWe need to cut out right now and go to happy hour, because you are crazy.â I pointed into the conference room. âWho in there is supposed to be my dream guy?â
âTaylor, you really think Iâm crazy, donât you?â
I stretched my eyes. âYah!â
âHe left early. He had to go back to New York with his daughter.â
âHis what?â
She grabbed my arm. âCâmon letâs walk to the break room.â She continued, âHis daughter.â
I frowned and she added, âWhat am I going to do with you?â
âLeave me alone and stop trying to find me a man.â
âTrust me. This one is fine.â
As I perused the vending selection, I said. âAnd he has a daughter. I donât even deal with my own niece and nephew. Hell if Iâm trying to play stepmom.â
