never spoke of love. He never spoke about whether there was a future for them together and she was afraid that he would simply have enough of her at some point and would leave her with a broken heart. She did not have the courage to ask him about this. She could not bear facing him if he told her that it was just fantastic sex that was keeping them together.
Sighing, Cherry reached for a pen and a piece of paper. She had made a decision. With tears in her eyes she began to write.

    Dear Merlon,

I’ve decided to leave New York. Please don’t try to follow me. I want to build a new life for myself. Alone! The last few days with you have been wonderful but it couldn’t last. I’m sure you know that as well as I.
Please have pleasant memories of me.
Thank you for the beautiful time.
    Cherry

Her heart pounding, Cherry came from behind the desk and walked across the room to the other end where Merlon was sleeping on the pull-out couch. She looked at him full of sorrow. He looked so relaxed in his sleep. A slight smile turned up the corner of his mouth and she resisted the impulse to kiss his sensual lips for the last time. She hoped that she would forget him at some point, but that definitely would not be soon. It was pointless blocking out the truth. She loved him. But she was simply an awful coward. It was better to leave him now than to risk him replacing her with another woman at some time. She would not survive that. And, anyway, he was an elf. At some point he would definitely want to return to his own world. And he would live for much longer than she would. He had told her that elves can reach about a thousand years old. Whilst she, at his side, would become older and less attractive, he would remain young. At some time he would not be able to help himself losing interest in her. She would not even be able to reproach him for it. No! It was better for her to go now when she had just begun to love him. She would not risk her love growing only for it then to be broken one day.
With trembling fingers she put the note next to him and turned away quickly before she changed her mind. With weak knees and a lump in her throat she left the room. And him. As she stepped out of the house into the open air part of her died and she knew this part would never live again.

Chapter 7

M erlon woke up to the delicious feeling of total happiness. The previous night had been unbelievable. He had felt how close he and Cherry had become. It was not simply the sex. It was so much more. The knowledge that she was the woman with whom he would spend the rest of his life filled him with such a feeling of happiness that even the prospect of his crowning no longer worried him.
He stretched out his arm to pull Cherry close to him again but his hand grasped emptiness. With a sinking feeling he opened his eyes and saw his suspicion confirmed. Cherry was no longer lying next to him. Instead, he saw a note. He frowned and grasped the piece of paper. His heart pounded as he scanned the brief note and his heart cramped painfully. He screwed up the piece of paper in his hand and uttered a cry of rage and pain. How could she? How could she just disappear and describe everything that had happened between them with such a banal word as
beautiful
.
It was like the stab of a dagger into his heart.
In one movement he leapt up from the bed and in his anger and despair he ripped apart the covering on the couch and tore the pillows until the furniture looked as if a pack of lions had attacked it. Without noticing he had transformed into his elf form and his golden pupils were absolutely glowing with rage. His inner beast had awakened and had made his nails into claws and his canine teeth into fangs. It happened only rarely that his beast reached the surface. Normally he had it fully under control. But the pain of losing Cherry had robbed him of control. After the couch it was the armchair’s turn and after that he grabbed other pieces of furniture. Not
