was the one stringing her along, instead of the other way around. “Don’t worry, Jena. I’m pretty sure he has a great sense of humor.” She leaned in a little closer and whispered, “And it wouldn’t surprise me if I end up being on the horse’s end of this joke.”
Jena gave her a half smile and rolled her eyes. “I still think you should come clean,” she reiterated before walking away.
If she was able to pull it off, Cara wondered if Tanner would laugh just as hard at himself as he had when she thought he had been asking her to do a three-way with his sister.
She blamed Duncan and his nefarious ways for making her jump to such a n erroneous conclusion. Duncan had no problem asking her to perform all sorts of sexual acts, which she refused to partake in. Her refusal had probably been part of the reason he began searching out other women. It took a long time for Cara to stop blaming herself, but Duncan had known exactly who she was when they married. It was he who had not shown his true colors until later, and Duncan’s pallet was full of hues and tints she couldn’t bring herself to live with.
Tanner placed his hand on the small of her back, and opened the door. The storm had dissipated and the air felt fresh and clean. Cara was glad Tanner hadn’t tried to impress her with a fancy restaurant. She could just imagine trying to race through the thunderstorm in high-heels while wearing a skin-tight dress as they tried to reach the entrance in record time. The sockless tennis shoes she wore were soaked, but at least she hadn’t slipped and fallen on her ass. The date at Rookies had been exactly what she needed to let her hair down and to help find her way back to being a normal person.
As they approached his truck , Tanner stopped and pulled Cara into his chest. “Your hair smells delicious. I think I have my dessert right here.” He nibbled her neck, and she felt his body press into hers. Her arms went around his shoulders, and her head fell back to give him greater access to her tingling flesh.
His touch was like honey and Cara couldn’t get enough. “It’s Rosemary and Mint,” she groaned through a sigh of pleasure. “I’m glad you like it.”
Tanner moaned . His hands caressed her face and he captured her eyes with his gaze. If they went any further they’d end up doing it in the cab of his truck. That was not going to happen. Comfort and chocolate were high on Cara’s list of priorities this evening, so she nudged Tanner back and opened the passenger side door.
When they were both situated on the bench seat, he reached out and stroked her cheek. Cara pressed her face into his warm hand and flames of desire fanned out. She felt herself open up, and doing it in the cab suddenly seemed much more appealing, but a second later the door slammed and Tanner slid the key into the ignition.
W ith an impish grin, he asked, “How about dessert at my place?”
As they neared Granite Gates Estates, Cara began to feel restless. This was only their first date, and Cara worried she wasn’t setting the proper precedence. Tanner must have sensed her nerves because he placed a firm hand on her thigh and made small circles with his thumb on top of her leg. The feelings raging inside her were out of control and she knew something good was waiting inside Tanner’s apartment.
He pulled into his parking spot , and Cara automatically reached for the door handle.
Tanner squeezed her leg, “Stay there, I’ll get the door.”
Cara never cared for being doted on in this manner. The limousines, the chauffeurs, and the servants had all been just too much for the girl who had spent her childhood racing up and down the vineyards of her family’s boutique winery as she helped with the harvest.
When she grew older , she developed an interest in science. The day Cara burst into her father’s office and proclaimed that when you added yeast to a simple sugar solution that alcohol was formed, he walked her over to
