husband ever bought the place. âCourse, Mrs. PattonâI mean Mrs. Tagleyâwas the real power behind the throne, you might say. Samanthaâs father never did have the gumption she did. But then, I guess thatâs why they moved out to the country in the first place.â
âBecause Mr. Patton didnâtâdidnât have enough gumption?â George asked, leaning against the counter.
âWell, because his business had failed, I mean,â clarified Mrs. Reames. âHeâd had some kind of nervous collapse after that businessman got through with him, and he and the missus bought the inn to give him more quiet surroundings. Ha! More quiet, my foot! Why, I can rememberââ
âYou said âafter that businessman got through with him,âââ Nancy gently reminded Mrs. Reames. âWho do you mean?â
âWhy, he wasâhe wasâthe name escapes me now,â said Mrs. Reames. The room service telephone rang just then, but she ignored it. âLet them wait! They wonât starve! Well, whatever his name was, it was a real scandal, what he did to Mr. Patton. Said he was going into partnership with him. Got him to sign a lot of bad checksâand just cleaned him out. Mr. Patton never could hold his head up after thatââ
Mrs. Reames snapped her fingers so suddenlythat her glasses nearly fell off the end of her nose. âSawyer! That was it, Mr. Sawyer!â
Nancy just stared at Mrs. Reames for a moment before asking, âMr. Sawyer? Any relation to Brock Sawyer?â
âThat actor? Yup. Thatâs the one. Heâs sitting pretty high in the saddle now, isnât he? But his background is nothing to be proud of. Iâm not surprised Mrs. PattonâI mean Mrs. Tagleyâcanât stand the sight of him.â Mrs. Reames shot Nancy and George a knowing look.
âAfter all, the boyâs own father as good as murdered her husband.â

S UDDENLY Mrs. Reamesâs face froze. âYou wonât tell Mrs. Tagley Iâve been blabbing on about her like this, will you?â she begged, twisting her apron. âIâd probably get in all kinds of trouble!â
âI promise weâll keep your secret,â Nancy told her. She stood up to leave. âThank you so much. Come on, George.â
âYou were right, George,â said Nancy as she and George took the stairs up to the main floor. âThis really is a soap opera!â
George asked, âDo you think Mrs. Tagley could have been trying to get revenge on Brock for what his father did to her first husband?â
âItâs possible,â said Nancy. âI hope not, though. I like Samantha. It would be terrible for her if her mother had done something like that. And that reminds me of something else. Does Samantha know about the way Brockâs father treated her father? I mean, does she know she fell in love with the son of the man who destroyed her fatherâs spirit?â
George shrugged. âI guess thatâs one of the things you can find out when you talk to Mrs. Tagley. You are going to talk to her, arenât you?â
âYou betâvery, very carefully. I really donât want to get Mrs. Reames in trouble, so Iâll have to tiptoe around the whole thing. Letâs see, what time is it?â Nancy checked her watch. âFour-thirty. I donât think there are any more activities scheduled for this afternoon. This is probably as good a time as any to talk to Mrs. Tagley.â
âWant me to come?â asked George. âOr do you think she might say more if Iâm not around?â
âI guess I should try a personal approach,â said Nancy. âMaybe you can track down Bess and Jake.â
âWill do. Good luck!â George headed for the elevator.
Nancy found Mrs. Tagleyâs office next to Samanthaâsâthe door open. When Nancy peeked in, she saw that
