panted. âBut that girl threatened me with a lobotomy if I didnât let them go.â
âWe were going to follow them in a cab,â Thibault said, pulling free of Flickerâs embrace. âBut all we had was this.â
He pulled a sheaf of blank paper from his pocket.
Everyone stared at him, uncomprehending.
Kelsie eased back their group focus, letting Thibaultâs energy in. When sheâd first joined the Zeroes, sheâd thought he was a cold spot in the room. But he had a mellow, solid presence, once sheâd learned to feel for it.
âThis is from the money he threw down on the bar,â he said. âAway from him , it was just blank paper.â
âWhoa,â Flicker said. âIt looked real. And I saw it through everybodyâs eyes.â
Nate stood. âMoney. The ultimate shared hallucination.â
Somehow Nate always managed to sound like he was hosting a nature documentary.
âSay what now?â Ethan asked.
âMoney is a social construct,â Nate said. âIt needs a crowdâs agreement to make it work, to turn paper into something valuable. Havenât you ever found it weird that pieces of paper are valuable, just because of the numbers printed on them?â
âUm, no,â Ethan said.
But Kelsie was nodding.
Money had always seemed like a game to her and her father, except when they were out of it. Even then, Dad had usually found a way to get moreâat any moment, he had a bunch of cons going. Their friend Fig had said that Jerry Laszlo worked harder at conning people than if heâd had a regular job.
âOh, wait,â Ethan said, looking pale. âThis is not good.â
âItâs fascinating ,â Nate said. âAnd thatâs why he offered to pay for everyoneâs shipping, and drinks! If his powerâs like ours, heâs only rich when thereâs a crowd around him!â
âCrowd funding,â Thibault said drily. âWe should call him Kickstarter.â
âOr Coin,â Nate said.
âTheyâre just jerks .â Chizara rolled her eyes. âAnd you want to give them superhero names?â
âUh, I think weâve got a bigger problem than his name,â Ethan said. The energy in the room spasmed, focusing on him. He looked like heâd been busted cheating on an exam. âBecause I totally bribed some cops with a bag full of that money.â
Nate stared. âYou . . . what?â
âDid you just say you bribed cops? â Chizara cried.
âTechnically, it was the voice that bribed them,â Ethan said. âAnd technically I didnât bribe them at all. I just handed them a bag of blank paper in exchange for going away.â
âOops,â Flicker said.
âThe cops were all smooth about it. They didnât even look in the bag!â Ethanâs fear was pulsing through the group, setting off an alarm in Kelsieâs head. âBut the moment they try to buy doughnuts, theyâre going to be pissedâ !â
Nate held up a hand, and everyone went quiet.
âWhat are they going to do, report us?â he said. âThey took a bribe . We can pay them real money later.â
âEasy for you to say!â Ethan cried. âYouâve never had cops on your tail!â
âExcept for the time your mother brought two detectives to my home, after you called me from a police station asking for help .â Nate turned away, and Kelsie felt him shutting out Ethanâs ragged, anxious energy. âWhatâs more important is thatwe just discovered two more powers in the world, and we let them get away!â
âNot for long,â Thibault said. âTheyâre planning something tomorrow. Something worse than this.â
The feeling of being invaded flowed through Kelsie again. She wanted to lash out, punch someone, protect her territory.
âDonât they care about keeping their powers
