stroked the top of Master Robbieâs head and murmured something to him, which Elodie deduced must be an assurance that all would turn out well.
Master Robbie nodded while looking straight ahead. If he had any affection for his guardian, he was keeping the feeling to himself. His sad face was no sadder than it had been, but, of course, heâd already known.
âIâll stand with you.â Albin put an arm around Elodieâs shoulders and whispered, âHow strange that you arrived for this. Is thereââhe paused dramaticallyââmore to be revealed?â
Much more. She whispered back, âAll will be told in the final act.â
âNo one has left the Oase,â High Brunka Marya continued, âso one of you has the Replica or has hidden it. If you expect to profit from it, expect otherwise. Weâll catch you as a hawk catches a squirrel. Even if you leave Lahnt, weâll find you and deliver you to the earl.â
The earl, who administered the kingâs justice on Lahnt, wasnât known for his mercy.
âBut if the Replica is returned before anyone onZertrum is hurt, then I wonât seek you out. Youâll have the satisfaction of having stolen it and no oneââ
Master Tuomo stepped backward over the bench. âUwald! We must leave. High Brunka, you know we must.â
Master Uwald stood, too. âYes, yes. Robbieââ
âSit, both of you. Iâve sent someone to warn Brunka Arnulf. Heâll raise the alarm.â
Had Count Jonty Um issued the warning by now? Was he on his way back? Elodie looked up at the distant windows to see if theyâd lightened with dawn, and choked back a gasp. They had brightened, except one, which was emerald green. Pressed against the window, ITs eye.
Master Uwald sat.
Master Tuomo remained standing. âNo one can travel fast enough to reach Zertrum in time.â
âThis messenger will.â The high brunka didnât explain.
Elodie hoped mention of a mysterious messenger would discomfit the thief, and perhaps it had, but everyone appeared equally dazed.
âSit, Master Tuomo. No one may leave. The rooms of all the guests are being searched right now. Yours, too, Mistress Sirka.â
The barber-surgeon stiffened. âHair and teeth! They canât! Not without me looking on!â
âMistress Sirka, dear lioness, theyâre interested in nothing but the Replica.â
What in her belongings did Mistress Sirka want to keep secret? Elodie wished she could be there for the searchâand here, too.
âIf anything is harmed, Iâll lop off someoneâs ear.â
High Brunka Marya seemed unconcerned.
âWho will search the beesâ belongings?â Master Tuomo asked. âYou canât leave anyone out.â
Master Uwald agreed. âThe game should be fair.â
Was everything with him a game to bet on, even the destruction of his farm?
âBees have nothing of their own,â High Brunka Marya said.
âThey have their pallets,â Master Robbie said.
Brave, to disagree with the high brunka! Elodie thought.
He went on. âDonât they sleep on the same one every night? The Replica could be stowed in a mattress. It would fit.â
IT would admire that observation, Elodie thought.
Master Uwald did. âWell done, Robbie!â
Master Robbieâs hand found his mourning beads. Elodie wondered if praise reminded him of his grandmother.
Mistress Sirka chimed in. âThey have spare shifts, hose, undershirts, and boots for the snow. The Replica would fit in a boot.â
âThe bees are searching in pairs. Mistress Sirka, you may go through the beesâ things with Master Tuomo. Master Uwald, dear, if you would be so kind as to search with Goodman Albin.â She didnât mention Elodie or Master Robbie.
Albin bowed at Master Uwald. âAt your service.â
âYou may begin after weâve finished talking,â
