families falling apart, Dr. Peter,â she said.
âIs that because youâre afraid your family is falling apart?â
Sophie nodded.
âYou want to tell me about it?â
No, she didnât. But the words came out anyway, in one big blurt.
âZeke is acting out all over the place like heâs Terrible Two again,â she said. âLacie is being all weird about boys. Daddy says Iâm the only sane one left in the family.â
âWhat about your father? Is he being âall weirdâ?â
Sophie shook her head. âWeâre getting along better than ever in my whole entire life.â She hugged the pillow until its nose dug into her stomach. She knew what Dr. Peterâs next question was going to be.
âAnd how about your mama?â he said.
âI think sheâs gonna leave us! She hardly laughs or talks, and she acts like sheâs always mad at Daddy. And itâs all my fault!â
âYour fault?â Dr. Peter said. âYou want to tell me why you think that?â
âDaddy told me if I kept making good grades and staying out of trouble, she would feel better. Thatâs why I didnât tell her about what happened today. She might just pack her suitcase and go. I would hate it without her. Sheâs my mama!â
Sophie didnât realize until then that she was crying. Dr. Peter handed her a Kleenex out of a box with moons and stars on it.
Sophie plastered one over her eyes and cried into it some more. Dr. Peter just waited. When she looked up at him, he was studying her carefully.
âYou know, Loodle,â he said, âI almost never tell you that youâre wrong.â
âAre you going to now?â Sophie said.
âI am.â He leaned forward. âYou are so wrong about anything between your mother and father being your fault. Or Zekeâs, or Lacieâs.â
âBut I donât want her to leave for any reason. Iâm trying to fix it. Iâm helping with Zeke when he starts acting like a little brat, and Iâm not fighting with Lacie. But I already miss Mama, and she isnât even gone yet.â
Dr. Peter nodded. âDo you feel like sheâs gone because she isnât with you like she used to be with you?â
âYes!â Sophie said.
âYou know something, Loodle?â he said. âYou sometimes know things about people they havenât even figured out about themselves.â
Sophie felt the pain in her chest again. âThen she is going to leave. I have to stop her!â
âNow hang on,â Dr. Peter said. âAll Iâm saying is that you seem to understand that she is taking a little mental trip right now, just like you do when you get scared about things and go into Sophie World.â
âWhatâs she scared of?â Sophie said.
âThat I canât tell you. But I think youâre the best person in the house to understand about wanting to escape.â
Sophie straightened her shoulders. âI can help her then.
Iâll give her a signal when she starts drifting off, like Fiona coughs when she sees me zoning out in school.â
Dr. Peterâs face grew serious. âI donât want you to try to fix your mother, okay, Loodle? First of all, that isnât your job. Itâs Godâs.â
âBut I keep asking him to fix it and he doesnât!â
âI think heâs working on it. In fact, Iâm sure of it. What do you say we let him do his job and you do yours? Just like the astronauts on your crew.â
âBut whatâs my job?â Sophie said.
Dr. Peterâs eyes twinkled again. âI think itâs time to get to know Jesus a little bit better so you can see how God handles stuff like this.â
âBack to the Bible,â Sophie said.
âYouâre brilliant,â Dr. Peter said, handing her a piece of paper with Bible verses written on it. âThat must be why they made you
