the
man she was hopelessly falling in love with. She settled back in
the crook of his arm, snuggling close to his naked body, relishing
her last night with him and the way he made her feel safe and
loved.
Soon, sleep claimed her. Somewhere in the
night, she dreamed she was lying with Connor in a field of
bluebonnets and Indian paintbrushes, the sun glowing down on them,
warming their skin. The warmth faded, a cold wind blowing over her
skin. In her dream, Connor had gone, leaving her alone in the
field, the sun having set and a starless night closed in around
her.
She called out, but he didn't come. Tears
slipped from the corners of her eyes, sobs rising in her chest.
"Please," she called. "Don't go."
"I'm here," a deep, resonant voice called
out. "I'm not leaving. I love you too much...naked."
Something smooth and velvety soft brushed
across her lips, over her chin and down her neck.
"Connor?"
"Guess again."
There was that voice again, like melted
chocolate, spreading into every pore of her body. "Am I dreaming?"
Charli asked.
"A little." He chuckled. "Open your eyes, my
beautiful, sexy lover."
The velvety soft thing slid across a breast,
tickling her nipple. Fire ignited in her core and Charli blinked
open her eyes and stared up into a masked face.
Suddenly awake, her gaze darted to the
pillow beside her, where Connor had been sleeping. Hadn't it been
only moments before?
"Looking for someone?" Original Sin's lips
curled upward while his hand trailed a soft yellow rose lower still
across Charli's belly.
Where was Connor? Heart pounding, Charli
glanced over O.S.'s shoulder. "How did you get in?"
"I have my ways."
"Well, you have to leave." Nothing would
risk what she’d found with Connor.
"So soon? But I've only just arrived."
"I don't care. It's over between you and me.
I love Connor."
The eyes behind the mask blinked and the
smile twisted. "Does he make you as hot as I do?"
Charli sat up, leaning her back against the
headboard, dragging the sheet up over her nakedness. "Hotter."
Perched on the edge of the bed, O.S. dragged
the rose over Charli's hand, the one holding the sheet. "Will he
share you with others?"
"I don't need others. He's more than enough
for me," she declared, surprised at her own words.
"Does he plan dirty tricks to feed your
sexual appetite?" His hand descended on her calf, squeezing it
gently.
Charli jumped, her foot kicking away from
his grip. "Get out," she cried.
The sharp movement caught O.S. unawares and
he rolled off the side of the bed, his head connecting with the
footboard, before he landed flat on his back.
He lay still for a long time.
Oh god, what had she done? Charli bunched
the sheet around her and peered at the man lying on the floor.
"Er...sir? Original Sin? Mister?"
He didn't stir, his eyes closed, the mask
askew.
Holy crap, had she killed him?
Easing a foot off the bed, she dropped to
the floor and leaned over the man dressed in the black pants, black
shirt and black mask. His hat had fallen off and lay on the floor
beside him, exposing a shock of sandy blond hair. A strikingly
familiar shade of sandy blond.
Charli reached out, grasping the edge of the
mask. As she dragged it up over his forehead, a hand snagged her
wrist, but he was too late.
"Connor?" Charli stared down at the man
who'd kept her guessing for the past two weeks. The mystery man
behind the dirty tricks, the mastermind responsible for making her
life crazy, hectic, and miserable to the point she thought she'd
have to leave town for good. "Bastard!" She jerked her hand, trying
to escape his grip. "You bastard." Her voice cracked. "Do you think
I'm just some stupid woman you can trick into dirty sex?"
"No, no. Not at all." Connor sat up, hauling
her into his arms, refusing to let her go. "I did it all for
you."
"What? Made a fool out of me in front of
everyone?"
"If you mean in front of the O'Briens, they
can be trusted. No one else knows but you and me."
"You lied."
"For you."
